NP 1364 Moves Under Its Own Power for the First Time in 73 Years!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
On February 21, 2026, the Northern pacific Railway Museum reached a historic milestone as Northern Pacific steam locomotive NP No. 1364 moved under its own power for the first time in 73 years.

Built in 1902 for the Northern Pacific Railroad, this S-4 class locomotive once hauled passenger and freight trains across the Pacific Northwest. After decades on static display and years of dedicated restoration, 1364’s wheels turned and its whistle echoed through the Yakima Valley once again.

This moment represents years of hard work by our volunteers, staff, supporters, and community partners.

More information about future public steaming opportunities will be shared soon.

Weekend Work Update: Northern Pacific 1364

Mechanical work continued on Northern Pacific 1364 this weekend, with volunteers completing several important projects on both the locomotive and tender.

Work on the locomotive included installation of the valves and connection to the valve gear, an important step in reassembling the running gear and moving 1364 closer to operation.

Work also focused on the tender, where the crew addressed the air brake system plumbing to locate and correct any air leaks.

Inside the cab, the side windows were installed, further enclosing the cab and bringing it closer to a finished appearance.

Additional attention was also given to the hydrostatic lubricator. Inspection and disassembly showed the need for new seals, which are now on order. In addition, new insulating washers and brushes have been ordered for the locomotive’s dynamo as part of the ongoing restoration of the electrical system.

A big thank you to our dedicated volunteers whose time, skill, and hard work continue to make this progress possible!!

With all the excitement around NP 1364, we want to take a moment to highlight an urgent situation facing our friends at Yakima Valley Trolleys. They are asking for community support at the Yakima City Council meeting this evening, January 6. Please take a moment to read their post and support them.

New Council, Same Message: Save the Trolleys! 📣🚋
Save the Trolleys - Jan. 6 Council Meeting

This Tuesday, January 6 at 5:30 PM, new City Council members will be sworn in—and we want them to hear directly from the community that cares about preserving our beloved trolleys.

If you’ve never spoken at a meeting before, don’t worry — simply being present makes a difference, and we’re happy to help if you’d like guidance.

NOTE: Meeting starts at 5:30 PM but in order to speak during public comment you need to arrive early and put your name on the list.

We’ll also be asking people to return on January 20, when Council is scheduled to discuss our operating agreement again.

Let's stand up and save our community's heritage for future generations to enjoy! ♥️🚋
