Highlander Folk School Subject at Heritage Center
A symposium of those in attendance will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. in the teaching center of the Heritage Center, located at 465 Railroad Avenue, Tracy City, Tennessee.
Oliver W. Jervis, JD, Museum Chair, Director of Exhibits, and Historian, will initiate the symposium with a summary of Highlander in Grundy County from 1932 to 1962. After the revocation of its charter by the State of Tennessee, the school secured a new charter as the Highlander Research and Education Center to be located in Knoxville. After ten years, it relocated to New Market, Tennessee, where it now thrives.
In 2024, Highlander Research and Education Center acquired around 9 1/2 acres of the Highlander Folk School campus in Grundy County, including the Harry Lasker Memorial Library building. After restoration, the library was placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Secretary of the Interior.
The symposium will explore future use of the Grundy County campus.
