Tubac Presidio State Historic Park and Museum

Tubac Presidio State Historic Park and Museum We are the home to the oldest Spanish fort in Arizona & Arizona’s first state park.

Experience 2,000 years of history, from Native American & Spanish Colonial to early Mexican & pioneer American cultures. Tubac Presidio State Historic Park and Museum preserves the site of the oldest Spanish presidio, or fort, in Arizona. Established in 1752, the Presidio San Ignacio de Tubac was the first European settlement in what later became the state of Arizona. No visit to Tubac is complete

without a stop at Arizona’s first state park located in the heart of Tubac village. The Tubac Presidio is one of only three presidios in Arizona and is one of the rare sites where the story of New Spain’s presidios can be adequately told. (A presidio is buried under downtown Tucson and another is near Fairbank in Cochise County). Tubac Presidio State Historic Park and Museum was due to close in March, 2010 when the Arizona Legislature swept Arizona State Parks funds. The community of Tubac came together and succeeded in crafting a Public-Private Partnership that allowed Arizona’s first state park to remain open and available to the public.

As we reflect on our nation's history this week, it's interesting to remember that nearly 250 years ago another important journey was taking place here in the Santa Cruz Valley National Heritage Area!

While events leading up to the American Revolution were unfolding on the East Coast, the 1775–1776 Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail Expedition was traveling through this region, bringing more than 240 settlers from present-day Mexico to help establish San Francisco.

Today, you can still experience this history by visiting sites along the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail, including Tubac Presidio State Historic Park and Museum, Tumacácori National Historical Park, Historic Canoa Ranch Pima County, and Patronato San Xavier. These places help preserve the stories of the Spanish and Mexican Frontier and the history that continues to shape the Santa Cruz Valley today.

Use our Interactive Heritage Experiences Map to plan your visits along the trail!: https://santacruzheritage.org/heritage-experiences/interactive-map/

Oldie but a goldie. ❤️ Although this video is 11 years old, the history and stories it shares about the Presidio are just as meaningful today. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to hear from the late Shaw Kinsley and honor his lasting contribution to preserving the Presidio’s history.
