Recognize anyone in this photo? No? That is probably because this photo was taken around 1910!! Over 100 years ago!! It was taken shortly after this school building was built. This was a combination of several grades in front of the historic Turney School. This photo is still on display in the school house today.

We have reached 25% of our goal to assist with the replacing of windows at this historic schoolhouse. Thank you for your support!!!

Hello, I wanted to thank everyone for their contributions towards the windows. We have raised $175 towards our goal of $1000 thanks to generous contributors like you.

Were you aware that Turney had a grain elevator in operation in 1870!?!?! Shortly after the town was laid out in 1869, E. Dudley built the grain elevator in Turney in 1870. Our very own Turney Historical Society Treasurer, Grace Daniels worked at the grain elevator for 26 years!! Ms. Daniels recalled it being very hard work but loved the job and loved all the wonderful people that met during her years of service there. Ms. Daniel's uncle Harold Jones owned the elevator for a period of time. Today the elevator is privately owned by local farming operation Wade Farms but is still in use. That's 150 years of history!! Below is an ad from the late 1930's. Thank you for helping us preserve the Historic Turney School.

The town of Turney, Missouri located in Clinton County was established in 1869 and was once a major stop on the Kansas City Branch of the Hannibal-St.Joe Railroad. Please partner with the Turney Historical Society in preserving this historical Missouri town. Our latest preservation project involves replacing windows in the historic Turney School. The Turney School grounds were deeded over from the Hannibal-St. Joe Railroad September 13, 1878. The school thrived for several years and in 1902 the beautiful 2 story building that still stands today was erected. In December of 1923, two other rural schools nearby consolidated with Turney. In 1921 a 4 year high school was established, subsequently 1925 produced the first graduating high school class. The last high school class graduated in 1948. The elementary school remained opened until 1960, when the students in Turney were absorbed into the Lathrop R-II District and attended Lathrop elementary school. The building is currently used for various community events and is the meeting venue of the Turney Historic Society. Please join us in preserving this piece of history. Once these historic buildings are gone they cannot be replaced. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to us.

All donations to this campaign will go directly to the preservation of the Turney School.
