Lena Horne Facts I learned today:
Early life
Horne was born Lena Mary Calhoun Horne in Brooklyn, New York on June 30, 1917.
She dropped out of school at age 16 to help support her mother and began performing at the Cotton Club in Harlem. �
Hollywood career
Horne was one of the first Black performers to be signed to a major Hollywood film studio. She starred in films such as Stormy Weather and Cabin in the Sky in 1943.
Broadway career
Horne performed on Broadway, including in her own one-woman show, Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music, which won a Tony Award in 1981.
Recording career
Horne recorded from 1936 to 2000 and won three Grammys, including a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1989.
Civil rights activism
Horne was a civil rights activist who participated in the March on Washington in 1963.
Legacy
Horne was known for being confident, sassy, and straightforward. She refused to accept roles that portrayed a stereotypical Black woman.
Death
Horne died in New York City on May 9, 2010.
