Helene Warner Hibbard began touring children’s museums nationwide in the early 1980s to seek inspiration, and in 1984, CHOM Inc. was established. By 1985, a temporary location was secured at UA’s Smith Hall with over $150,000 donated by local businesses. By 1986, CHOM opened its doors for the first time and also received 501(c)(3) status. Their opening exhibits included Indian Village, Planetarium, First National Bank along with several others. CHOM also proposed to be included as part of Tuscaloosa’s Centennial Celebration.

• 1986: New officers were elected to the executive committee to provide continued growth and leadership.
