ARTIST STATEMENT:
We all move back and forth between public and private spaces. Rather than call attention to the origin or the destination, I pay attention to what is found along the way. I am compelled by the social mediation of landscape, and how desire and dis-
regard are manifested in objects and spaces over time. I’m influenced by the legacy of landscape painting, of Manifest Destiny, and its current expression in our built
and natural environment. My work celebrates the things we pass by, often unnoticed, while moving about our day. I am interested in entropy as well as the growth that is its companion.
Close observation of the patterns and structures in nature, as well as the rhythm of its seasonal cycles, is an enthusiasm and an influence. I see tenacity and resilience within these systems and feel deeply connected to them. There are relationships to
environment and climate, globalization, economic collapse, among other contemporary issues of both public and private concern.
Sara Dismukes is an Associate Professor of Design at Troy University, where she has been on the faculty since 2006.
In addition to design work, she also maintains an active studio practice. She earned her BFA at Henderson State University and her MFA at East Carolina University.

The University of Alabama Gallery is proud to present JÜRGEN TARRASCH- REMINISCENT STRUCTURES. This show will run from August 1st through September 12th. We will have a preview opening on August 1st, and a public reception on September 5th from 5-7pm. Tarrasch is a contemporary painter, with a background of classical art training, and brings these approaches onto contemporary aesthetic structures. This show at The University of Alabama Gallery features a range of work that highlights this multi-skilled artist, adept at both contemporary painting as well as frescoes, murals, gilding, and conservation.
Tarrasch says of his work, “I often think about what I visualize in my mind and what I reflect back in the form of my artwork. For me, nature – universally present – is the archetype and the vehicle through which I interpret my ideas. I think about my observations of the simple elements of nature, for example branches, leaves, and vines. I have always been interested in redefining these elements using rough geometric shapes and lines as a way to transfer my thoughts to brushstrokes on canvas or paper. To enhance the composition and reflect both the freshness and the withering of nature, I often use paints that I mix myself using dry pigments. It is the pattern of repetitive images, placed at different angles next to each other, and in different sizes and colors, that gives a sense of movement in my work.”
Jürgen Tarrasch has degrees from the European Center for Conservation and Historic Preservation, Venice (San Servolo), Italy, 1997 and an M.F.A from The Academy of Fine Arts Warsaw, Poland, 1993. From 2016 to 2024, he was an Assistant/Associate Lecturer of Art, Painting at Birmingham- Southern College. He is a freelance painter and conservator working in both Berlin, Germany and The United States. His artwork is included in the permanent collections of the Birmingham Museum of Art, the Montgomery Museum of Art, the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn University, and The Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw Poland, among others. His artwork can also be found in numerous private collections in the United States, Europe, and Japan.

Growing up in the Deep South often feels like growing up in a different time or country. The unique landscape, history and ways of being stand apart from the monolith of mainstream culture. Viewed from the outside as backwards and lacking; stereotypes of southerness are inert, and fail to include the South’s true complexity, enduring charm, and diversity. The reality of the South is lived, active and chosen every day. There’s a colloquialism here that “pretty is as pretty does”, or in other words, pleasant behavior always outweighs pleasant looks.

In this exhibition, featuring work from eight photographers collected by The Do Good Fund of Columbus, GA, each artist captures what we do—a farmer fashioning a scarecrow for his garden, parading dancers, or a brass band performing for a church service. These images convey the ways we live, with intricate layers of identity and belonging woven into the fabric of Southern life. These are decisive moments. Intimate portraits and landscapes alike embody the spirit of the South as lived and living.

As Pretty Does celebrates ways of being, the familiar and unexpected alike. Through the lenses of these photographers, history and modernity intersect, and the ordinary becomes extraordinary. While not always traditionally beautiful, the allure, honesty, and unpredictability found in these everyday moments resonates like jazz through humid Southern air.

Curated by Micah Mermilliod in partnership with The Do Good Fund. The Do Good Fund is a collection of contemporary, post World War II photographs capturing the rich culture in the Southeastern United States. Since 2012 this public based Georgia charity has collected works from Guggenheim Fellows and emerging regional artists alike, and stands as one of the most complete artistic views of modern Southern living.
