Liberty Hall Museum at Kean University is the home of New Jersey's first governor, William Livingston and has been a silent witness to more than 250 years of history! Welcome to Liberty Hall Museum at Kean University, home of New Jerseyโ€™s first elected governor and signer of the Constitution, William Livingston. Built in 1772, on the eve of the American Revolution, Liberty Hall has been a silent w

itness to more than 200 years of American history. Over the last two centuries, the originally designed 14-room Georgian Style home has grown into a 50-room Victorian-style mansion. The site houses extensive collections of antique furniture, ceramics, textiles, toys and tools owned by seven generations of Livingston and Kean families. Congressmen and Senators, business entrepreneurs, and pioneering women with vision and strength. The stories of their lives, passed down from generation to generation, tell how this family met the challenges of a changing nation. Visit Liberty Hall Museum and discover the living past.

Do you think you would make a good spy?? ๐Ÿ•ตโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ”Ž

Last night, at our first Uncork History of the season, Caity took us on a journey from Agent 355 to CIA- 250 Years of Women Spies in America!
We learned about the cunning, intrigue, and bravery these women spies possessed from the Revolutionary War period to today.
We heard the surprising story of how Julia Child worked in intelligence long before she taught the country about French cooking and more!๐Ÿ˜ฒ
After the fascinating lecture we relaxed in our historic gardens with wine aka "truth serum" and finger foods as the sun set around us.๐Ÿท๐Ÿง€๐ŸŒ…

Be sure not to miss next month when Kayla continues the Uncork History series with Traveling Around Liberty Hall: 250 Years of Transportation! ๐ŸŽ ๐Ÿšฒ ๐Ÿš‰ โœˆ๏ธ

Our next staff highlight is Kaitlin Osucha, one of our Museum Educators! Kaitlin has worked at Liberty Hall Museum since this past September. She started off as an intern and then became an educator.โ˜บ๏ธ

Kaitlin grew up in Chatham, NJ. She attended Washington College in Chestertown, MD and majored in History with a minor in Museum, Field, & Community Education.ย ๐ŸŽ“

Outside of work, Kaitlin enjoys cooking or baking new recipes. Her favorite recipe is chocolate chip banana bread! She recently got an espresso machine for Christmas so sheโ€™s been trying out new coffee-based drinks. Kaitlin is currently in her barista era!๐Ÿงโ˜•๏ธ

Kaitlin has two rescue dogs, Junie is a 3 year old mix that resembles a coonhound. Chai just turned one and is also a mix resembling Scooby-Doo. She enjoys taking her dogs on walks and to the beach during the summertime.๐Ÿ•โ›ฑ๏ธ

A fun fact about Kaitlin is that she has a twin brother named Zachary. Kaitlin is older by 18 minutes, and she doesnโ€™t let him forget it! Another interesting fact is she wrote a letter to former President Barack Obama and he wrote back!๐Ÿ˜ฒ

If Kaitlin could travel time, she would be interested in seeing the Titanic before it sank. While in college, she did a comparative study research project on it in Tennessee and Belfast. She would love to see the inside of the boat and walk around the rooms. She would also like to time travel to the year the shipwreck was discovered.๐Ÿ‘€

Kaitlin enjoys trying all different types of food, coffee, and desserts. If you are looking for food, she recommends El Ranchero in Chatham, NJ. If you are searching for your next great cup of coffee, she recommends getting an iced vanilla latte from Crew in Chatham, NJ. For dessert, hop on over to Nataleโ€™s in Summit, NJ for carrot cake and pastries!๐Ÿ˜‹

Thank you for reading about Kaitlin! She will be leaving Liberty Hall for the summertime as she embarks on the Buchanan Burnham Summer Scholars in Public History fellowship in Rhode Island. While we will miss her dearly and wish her the best of luck, we look forward to her returning in August and sharing her experience!๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿซถ

Were you out in your gardens this weekend?

This past Sunday, we continued our 250th anniversary celebration with not one but two events! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Guests started the day by learning all about the importance of gardens in early America and the role women played as horticulturist and healers.
Thank you to our guest speaker, Lesley Parness, for the intriguing lecture.

The afternoon had our young Liberty Learners discovering how colonists made their own medicine and how the residents of Liberty Hall cared for their health over the past 250 years.
Thank you to our intern, Ivette, for creating such a wonderful program.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at these two incredible events!๐Ÿซถ

Make sure to check our website, libertyhall.kean.edu, for our other upcoming 250th Celebration Events!

250th Family Fun Day: 250 Years of Medicine & Healthcare at Liberty Hall Museum in Union, NJ

Celebrate Americaโ€™s 250th birthday with our Liberty Learners 250th Family Fun Day series!

How did colonists make their own medicines? Join Liberty Hall Museumโ€™s Liberty Learners Adventure to discover how the residents of Liberty Hall cared for their health over the past 250 years. Through a mixture of natural remedies, herbs, and later commercialized medicines, the Livingstons and the Keans managed to treat and alleviate their symptoms. Explore how medicine has evolved, how certain healing practices are a shared human experience across generations, and make your own colonial remedies! Join us for this family-friendly tour of Liberty Hall to compare Livingstonโ€™s natural and plant-based remedies with those used by later residents.

Recommended for children in grades 1 through 5.

Reservations are suggested.
