History is something to cherish. What a beautiful story. May God bless this family in their time of loss. 🙏
Oct 5. Yesterday was one of those days that remind us why we enjoy doing this job so much. Charlie was talking to 2 ladies (who weren't here together) about the Wing Aero Sleigh paintings we have in the Museum. Another lady came in asking for information about the Wing Aero Sleigh paintings! It turned out the last lady, Jody, works at the Flower shop in St Ignace and she is doing the flowers for Chester Wing's funeral next Sat, Oct 11. Charlie dug out our file about him and went through that plus all the pictures we have here in the Museum. She was overwhelmed with what we have and said the family will love to see this. I have a feeling they may be more to this story next week. We'll see......
CB Wing, from St. Ignace, MI, built the first Aero Sleigh on or before 1918. His father, WG Wing, needed men and supplies delivered out of and up to the Carp River lumber mill, called “Wing & Brown Lumber. By 1918 WG was the sole owner of this mill. Around 1937 CB Wing gave the strawberry farm, north of town, to the county. The Wings had a copula on top of the Wing Garage that served as a US Weather Station and contact for planes to signal they were coming in at night. As there were no lights for the runway, CB would have cars drive out there and turn on their lights and light 55 gallon cans with fuel oil at the two ends of the runway. The quonset shed at the airport that was put up sometime in the 1920’s by CB has a place inside where a Wing mechanic worked on planes and pumped gas. The garage had an airplane radio and a direct line to the mechanic at the airport. The garage is also where they built the air sleds.
The Aero Sleighs were made from 1910-1957.
