! 👀 Meet Ankylosaurus!
This armored 🌱 plant-muncher stomped through the Late Cretaceous more than 65 million years ago, protected by bony plates and a powerful club tail that made predators think twice.

• Nicknamed the “tank of the dinosaur world”
• Covered in armor from nose to tail
• Used its giant tail club for defense
• Loved snacking on low-growing plants 🌿
• Stayed low and sturdy on short, powerful legs

If you LOVE Ankylosaurus, smash that like button with your best dino-tail swing and visit him in our newest exhibit Expedition Dinosaur: Rise of the Mammals! 🦖

: Dinosaurs Are Old, But These “Upside Down” Bacteria from New York Are Much, Much Older!

The oldest fossils in New York aren’t thousands of years old or even millions of years old. In fact, they are over one BILLION years old – 1.22 billion to be exact!

In Northern New York, back during the Proterozoic Eon, limestone formed in a shallow sea. Along the shore, close to where Balmat, NY, is today, sticky mats of bacteria thrived in these shallow waters. Periodically, grains of sand or silt stuck to these mats in thin layers, forcing the bacteria to grow upward and recolonize the surface. Over the years, the areas covered by bacterial mats grew upwards in oddly shaped mounds forming structures called stromatolites.

Starting about 1.21 billion years ago, the floor of the shallow sea, including the stromatolites was crushed by the coming together of two tectonics plates. The stromatolites and surrounding limestone were metamorphosed into marble. In fact, the pressure was so intense in this area, the rock layers were flipped upside down! We know this because the stromatolite mounds are inverted.

Pictured: (top) Balmat stromatolite that has been cut and polished (NYSM Collection); (bottom) diagram showing how stromatolites formed.
