to welcoming more than 30 readers from Reading Rhythms Morristown for a peaceful reading party in our historic garden. Guests unplugged, settled in with good books, and enjoyed the simple pleasure of reading together in a beautiful setting.

In honor of Juneteenth, Macculloch Hall Historical Museum shares a powerful detail from "Emancipation," a painting by 19th-century artist and political cartoonist Thomas Nast.

Created as part of Nast’s "The Grand Caricaturama" (1866-1867), a series of 33 paintings exploring American history from the nation’s founding through Reconstruction, “Emancipation” depicts recently freed African Americans paying tribute to a bust of assassinated President Abraham Lincoln.

Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, issued on January 1, 1863, declared freedom for enslaved people in Confederate states during the Civil War. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas and announced the freedom of more than 250,000 enslaved African Americans in Texas—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation and two months after the end of the Civil War and Lincoln’s assassination. Slavery was formally abolished nationwide later that year with the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Of the 33 paintings in “The Grand Caricaturama,” only eight are known to survive today—and two are on permanent exhibit at Macculloch Hall Historical Museum.

🌹 June is National Rose Month! 🌹

Take time to stop by and smell the roses blooming in the historic garden at Macculloch Hall Historical Museum.

Did you know? In 1810, the Macculloch family paid $1.00 to plant roses in their garden. At the time, newly introduced reblooming roses from China were becoming highly sought after in Europe, where most roses bloomed only once each year.

While the original rose varieties planted at Macculloch Hall no longer survive, the Museum continues the tradition by cultivating several beautiful varieties throughout the garden today.

Visit and enjoy the many roses currently in bloom! The garden is open daily and free to the public from 8:00 AM until dusk.

Join MHHM Teaching Artist Lisa Madson in the garden for a series of art workshops inspired by the Museum collection and garden.

Art in the Garden is for adult artists at any level—beginners, hobbyists, and career artists are all welcome.

Starting with Mini Block Printing on June 9, and Charcoal and Pastel on June 30, each workshop is designed to explore different techniques.

🌿 Welcome to our Summer 2026 Education Interns! 🌿

Macculloch Hall Historical Museum is excited to welcome Gabrielle Ashby and Gabbie Costanzo as our Summer 2026 Education Interns!

Working alongside Curator of Education and Community Engagement Karina Filipowski, Gabrielle and Gabbie will help lead a full season of summer garden programs for community partners and local families while gaining hands-on experience in the museum field.

Gabrielle is currently pursuing a PhD in Art History at Rutgers University. Gabrielle has experience in curating an online exhibition and is an editor of the Rutgers Art Review, a Peer-Reviewed Graduate Journal of Research in Art History. Gabrielle brings valuable experience working with children and young adults and is eager to engage visitors of all ages in the museum’s historic garden.

Gabbie will be starting the second year of the Museum Professions master’s program at Seton Hall University this fall. Gabbie’s academic experience includes multiple study abroad programs in Europe. Gabbie has a strong interest in civic engagement and values creating welcoming and trustworthy museums for visitors.

We look forward to an inspiring summer of learning and growth for our interns and participants in our Make it! Grow it! Learn it! programs, held both in the museum garden and at community locations.
