Utica Historical Society - Hufford House Museum

Utica Historical Society - Hufford House Museum Museum dedicated to showcasing local history of Utica Ohio. Dwight was born in the house in 1910 and died in 1991. It was built as a duplex.

The Utica Historical Society housed in the Hufford House Museum was organized in 1973, among the founding members were Dwight and Ethel Jewett, once residents of the house. Fittingly, being the oldest surviving building in the village, the house was built in 1824. An addition to the rear of the house was built on in the 1840’s. The Jewett’s once owned a five and dime store and when Ned and Phyllis

Hufford came to Utica in 1959, they purchased the store from the Jewett’s. Hufford’s Ben Franklin was a long time fixture in the village and after Ned passed in 1993, the family kept it operating until 2019. After a few years of being vacant the house was put up for auction in 1997. The Historical Society once looked into raising funds for a museum in 1989 but couldn’t raise enough funds to purchase a building and operate a museum. In memory of Ned Hufford, Phyllis purchased the property at auction to donate to the Society, if the Society could raise matching funds of $100,000 for operating expenses. They managed to raise $113,000. On May 17th 1997 Phyllis acquired the property for $99,000. Phyllis Hufford passed away in 2018. The society had been housed in the local library and had no place to display their collection of local artifacts. On June 24th, 2000 the museum was dedicated and since a Carriage House has been built behind the museum. That was started in 2000 when the Historical Society received a $50,000 Grant form the State of Ohio to build it and that was dedicated on December 5th, 2004. It houses Utica’s first mechanical fire truck from 1938.

We are reaching out to you again to seek photos and information on a few more teachers, Mrs. Fisher who taught in kindergarten, Mrs (Jan) Carter 4th grade 70's to 90's and Mrs. Thomas 5th grade. Tuesday we started a post about the current Post Office. As stated it was built by Dr. W.F. Babb on some of his former property. Here is a photograph (Dr. Babb and then Utica Postmaster Glen Rine) and another short article from The Herald May 2, 1963. If you recall a post of February 13th we did a then and now of the Post Office Location in the south half of the building on the north side of the Ritchey Building that was later the Tschappat Grocery location mentioned in this article.

The Current Utica Post Office was dedicated Sunday May 5, 1963. Here is a article from the Herald May 2, 1963 and photo of the building. It was built by Dr. W.F. Babb Veterinarian and former Mayor. There will be a short series covering this in the next few days posts. Plus a couple of photos of folks working there during the era.

Mrs. Elliott was a 3rd grade teacher at Utica Elementary School from roughly the mid 1950's to the mid 1960's. We are in search of a picture of her. Did you have her as a teacher and do you have a class picture with her in it? Please post her picture. If you had a different 3rd grade teacher, maybe one of your friends had her. We are desperate!!
