I never call myself a photographer, even tho I take a lot of photographs. Having worked with real artists for the past 40 years, I have too much respect for what they're trying to achieve.
However, there is one occasion every year when I put one of my pictures out there - the Visual AIDS benefit exhibition - POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE.
This year, 1565 artists from all over the world, including myself, have donated a 4x6 piece of art, for sale, first come, first serve, for $100. You don't know whose art you're buying (although if you've been in the art world long enough, you might think you recognise the work of some artists you know). You're just buying the work because you like the piece, and you want to support an important organisation.
My close friend, Patrick O'Connell was the Founding Director of Visual AIDS. After living w full-blown AIDS for 40+ years, he finally stopped fighting against the disease. I have other friends who are still living w it.
Visual AIDS utilizes art to fight AIDS by provoking dialogue, supporting HIV+ artists, and preserving a legacy, because AIDS is not over.
The benefit show and sale is just a week off. You should definitely take a look and support this event, this organisation, the fight against AIDS.
Who knows - you might get a Peter Hay Halpert photograph!
Postcards from the Edge is a unique benefit show and sale of original, postcard-size artworks by established and emerging artists. All artwork is exhibited anonymously, and the identity of the artist is revealed only after the work is purchased. All proceeds support the work of Visual AIDS.
