On this day, we honor Jesse Owens, who made history at the Berlin Olympics by winning his third gold medal on this day, adding to his incredible total of four gold medals in track and field events. Owens triumphed in the 100 meters, 200 meters, long jump, and 4x100 meter relay, stunning the world and defying N**i propaganda that sought to promote racial superiority.

Owens’ remarkable athleticism not only secured his place as one of the greatest Olympians of all time but also became a powerful symbol of courage and resilience against racism and discrimination. Despite facing segregation and inequality at home in the United States, Owens’ achievements challenged deeply ingrained prejudices and inspired future generations of athletes.

Beyond his Olympic success, Owens dedicated his life to promoting sportsmanship, education, and opportunity for African American youth.

Celebrate his legacy and learn more about African American trailblazers at the Copeland African American Museum, where admission is always free and all are welcome.
