Memorial Day is Monday, May 25th, and we’ll be at the Museum and the Cemetery. Have you attended one of our cemetery tours? They are truly an educational experience. Our volunteers are great storytellers; you’ll walk away knowing your community far more deeply. We will be learning about Vashon Veteran Robert Bennedsen, who died in service in Afghanistan, and Donald Holke, who perished in service in Vietnam. We’ll hear about work on the home front during WWII, and we’ll even learn about Vashon Veterans who served during the Civil War. The tours are offered at 1 pm and 2:30 pm at the Vashon Cemetery. The Cemetery Memorial Day program honoring all veterans begins at 11 am.

Also on Memorial Day, the Senior Center is hosting a BBQ in its restored Bacchus Memorial Garden. We are pulling out some lawn games, and the Fire Department is pulling out an engine. 12 - 3 pm. We are usually closed on Mondays, but the Museum will be open for this holiday.

Family Day is 10 am - 4 pm this Saturday, May 16th, and depending on the weather, we might take the show out to the front lawn. Our wonderful volunteers will be celebrating spring with May flower crafts. The whole family is welcome.

Be sure to head out back and look for the eagles. They are often in the trees above the Roger Stanley Hydro Boathouse.

May 5 is Museum Lovers Day, and GiveBIG is this a coincidence?

GiveBIG is live and all around Vashon (and beyond), folks are organizing and fundraising for causes great and small. It is heartening to see all the great work happening on Vashon and it makes for a very full inbox.

We are fundraising for our next special exhibit, Sealth: Camp of Our Dreams. It is a great community story about kids growing leadership skills and self-knowledge in the great outdoors. We are pleased to share it!

GiveBIG, give small, we welcome all gifts.
Thank you!

You will be so glad you spent part of your Saturday with her. We are proud co-sponsors of this event. Thank you Vashon Island Unitarian Universalists for inviting this living legend.

Saturday, May 9, 1:30 - 3:30 PM at Lewis Hall, behind the Burton Community Church, 23905 Vashon Hwy. SW.

Great to be in Kuni Mukai's garden for the 7th Annual Haiku Festival.
Dancing third graders, lovely short poems, and cherry blossoms.

The haiku are on view through May, but the cherry blossoms will not last until the end of May.

The continual care and attention to this important place is wonderful. It is a joy to be part of an island of thoughtful, creative people preserving our history. Thankful for all the stewards past and present.

Mukai Farm & Garden is open dawn to dusk.

Arbor Day!
Glad for all our Museum trees.
Particularly our sweet little cherry in the back.

It is a descendant of the 100 trees that were gifted in 1932 by the Vashon Japanese Society to Vashon High School. It was to express their gratitude for the fine public education their children had received.

Read a little more on the memorial sign Chantal Uto illustrated and designed at Vashon High School. The sign and trees stand as a tribute to the children of Vashon’s pre-war Japanese community.
