You might be tempted to buzz past Vega on Interstate 40, but if you pull off, youโ€™ll get to experience a few truly Texan things. You could walk inside the blade of a West Texas wind turbine. You could see a real (dead) rattlesnake, stiff from the freezer. And to top it off, you could down a slice of coconut-cream pie at a cafe that has saddles mounted on its bar stools. ๐Ÿฅง

The seat of Oldham County, Vega lies 35 miles west of Amarillo, sandwiched between the stripe in the road that marks the midway point of Old Route 66, in Adrian, and the feedlots of Wildorado. "Here in Vega, like so many other travelers who took the time to pull off, they got a feel for the freedom and excitement that Route 66 once held for Americans and a glimpse of small-town Texas, all rolled into one," writes Pam LeBlanc.
