Crystal River, the gem of Florida’s beautiful Nature Coast, is about a two hour drive from Tampa. Because Kings Bay is one of the best places in the world to observe manatees, Crystal River is an international destination.

Kings Bay, which has been designated an “Outstanding Florida Waterway,” offers opportunities for boating, diving, swimming, fishing as well as a variety of Manatee and Eco-Tours. In addition, there are miles of nature trails to hike, bike, and observe an abundance of birds, deer, alligators, and other wildlife.

In 2003, the Broward County Cultural Affairs approached me asking if I would like to participate in “Arts in Public Places” by placing three one-of-a-kind photographs in the Ft. Lauderdale – Hollywood International Airport. The images were to be six feet by sixteen feet and placed in terminals 2 and 3 above the escalators.

John Rude, Executive Director of Broward Urban River Trails, brought together Margaret McPhearson & David from South Florida Water Management District and Kevin Carter, for an adventurous trip up the New River in Ft. Lauderdale. The Broward Urban River Trails had been working to clean up the New River and reconnect it to its original water source: the Everglades. To my amazement, I found more than houses along the New River. Many photographic opportunities presented themselves and I had a great time capturing a part of the river that few had photographed.

Chasahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge, Florida – Many people told us about a beautiful secret place in north Florida. the name of the place is a tongue twister: Chasshowitzka River. When we decided to do some photography along the northwest coast all we could remember was the name of the place had a “Z” in it. We eventually found the location, and true to the stories people had told us, it is a beautiful place.

We launched our pontoon boat near the freshwater spring and spent a week on the river photographing both the freshwater area and the brackish area. Seven Cabbage Cut is taken out in the wetlands at the mouth of the river. The photograph is unusual because it was taken from our boat. I saw the scene and knew it was what I wanted to photograph. We anchored the boat and I climbed over the edge, down into the saw grass, then immediately sunk into the muck up to my waist. Setting up the tripod in the muck would be impossible. With difficulty, I climbed out of the muck and got back into the boat to consider my predicament. I knew I wanted to photograph this scene, but how?

The solution to my problem was to put out four anchors, one at each corner of the boat. They helped stabilize the boat, although we did sway slightly with the current. I set up my 12-foot ladder, tripod, and camera on the bow of the boat. After getting my focus adjusted and my film in place, Niki went to the stern of the boat and watched for the moment the boat stopped swaying, at which time I took my photo. I took seven photos that way and only one negative was without movement. It was amazing that I managed to get one good negative under those conditions.

At a later date, I became involved with the Florida Aquarium in Tampa and was pleased to find out that the ecosystem on which the aquarium is based is that of the Chasshowitzka River.

Florida’s geological history has seen most of its land submerged underwater. A unique topographical feature, the Lake Wales Ridge in the central part of the state, has stood above sea level for over a million years. I had longed to photograph this area.

On the day I arrived, dark skies rolled in, and the wind howled, adding drama to the scene. Without hesitating, I jumped out of the jeep and quickly set up my camera. Fearing the storm would unleash heavy rains, I was grateful to capture this shot shortly before the first raindrops began to fall.

The quiet places remind us to reflect.

Today, on Memorial Day, we honor the courage and sacrifice of those who gave their lives in service to our country.

Their legacy lives on in the freedoms we enjoy every day.

Photographing the Navajo slot canyons could be a lifetime occupation. They are beautiful creations of abstract designs. While we were out west, I took the opportunity to try my hand at photographing them.

We joined a Photographic Tour of Antelope Canyon. I didn’t fully comprehend how fast digital photographers take pictures. There I was with an old-fashioned large-format film camera and by the time I got set up, everyone was ready to head on to the next location! It was very frustrating. I did manage to capture a couple of images. I was amazed they turned out. The experience was so frustrating that I finally gave up and went outside to sit and wait until everyone was through.

When I got outside a Navajo man came up to me and said, “I saw you in the canyon and you looked very frustrated. If you’d like an experience that is more appropriate to your large camera, my grandmother owns a slot canyon you can photograph.” The next day we traveled to his canyon and had a great time.

In 1994, The Wilderness Society and the Forestry Department invited me to photograph the seven wilderness areas of Florida. I was given seven days in which to achieve the project! I took it on as a challenge to see if I could do it. I had two pieces of film each day that I could shoot. This photograph is one of the locations I came upon in the Ocala National Forest.
