Dear Friends,
It’s time for our yearly fundraiser: The Erotic Reading. The Ventura County Poetry Project nurtures creativity in our county through poetry readings, contests, poetry for children, free workshops and much more. All free of charge.
The Erotic Reading is a wonderful way to experience the joys of poetry and help us.
The best way to help us in this fundraiser is by donating ahead of time: $25 or more via Paypal. Just go to vcpoetryproject.org and choose “about.” That will take you to the Paypal Donation button. You can donate using any credit card.
Or you may send a check made out to VC Poetry Project. Please mail to 1296 Placid Ave, Ventura, Ca 93004. All contributions are tax deductible.
Below, check out this amazing quote from the Nobel prize-winning Greek poet. One of my favorites. There are so many now who need to see their confiscated justice given back. And we need those birds who sing eros, eros, eros, in the midst of all this trouble.
In gratitude,
Marsha, Friday, Brad, Phil and the Ventura County Poetry Project Board

If a separate personal Paradise exists for each of us, I reckon mine must be irreparably planted with trees of words the wind silvers like poplars, by people who see their confiscated justice given back, and by birds that even in the midst of the truth of death insist on singing in Greek and saying, ‘eros, eros, eros.’

new online writing workshop led by Jon Pearson
THE ABRACADABRA WRITING PROCESS
Creating what you say as you say it

takes place on Thursdays

For more information and to signup
[email protected]

THE ABRACADABRA WRITING PROCESS
Starting in January, I’m going to teach what I call the “Abracadabra Writing Process.” I call it that because “Abracadabra” comes from an Aramaic phrase that means Creating what you say as you say it. Which is how I write, how I draw, and how I speak to groups. I’m going to show how writing can be pure magic.
It's going to be a six-week course. Each week I’ll be presenting a new writing experiment. I’ve got zillions of writing techniques you won’t find in any book. It’s going to be quirky. It’s going to be fun. It’s going to be life changing, potentially. Writing has changed MY life.
I find the only way I can stay sane in this world is if I find my “crazy.” And that’s what we’re going to be doing together—creating a safe space in which we can all go nuts. I’ve been leading writing groups for years and my ONE goal is to help YOU find your MOJO.
I’ve written over three hundred Sunday Pieces, three hundred short stories, three unhinged (and unpublished) novels, and countless poems, and have been nominated for two Pushcart Prizes. Plus, I was once a cartoonist on the Oakland Tribune. You can check out my wildly eclectic website: www.jonpearsoncreative.com .
The class will be Thursdays from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM Pacific Time. (Before dinner on the west coast and after dinner on the east coast, since it will be three hours later there.) It will start on January 8, 2026. I’m going to limit it to ten people, so everyone has time to write and receive positive feedback.
Cost: $40 per class (times six) equals $240. Single class $45 if you want to test drive it.
If that’s too much for you, talk to me. But I swear it will be worth it. Because I’ve devoted my life to creativity. And what you’re going to get you won’t get anywhere else. I promise.
Let me know if you are interested, and I’ll send you my Zelle or Paypal contact info and later, the link to the class. It’s first come, first served.
Tell your friends, your colleagues, the world. Because the world needs what we will be doing. Feel free to email me with questions or comments.
Stay young and wise,
Jon Pearson

Before Lady Gaga, before Madonna, there was Johanna Went. Johanna Went is a performance artist. She found her home in the LA punk scene of the 1970s after a run doing experimental theater. The Minutemen opened for her. I got to meet her in Ventura because she was on a panel I was moderating for a screening of the film Desolation Center. I was stoked when she agreed to do the show. – Ron Placone

Anacapa Review is a new online journal from the editors of Gunpowder Press. Anacapa Review will highlight individual poems that capture the sense of inspiration, insight, and craft that we look for in Gunpowder Press publications.
Anacapa Review will be published monthly. Please submit up to 3 poems of any length.
Every two months, we will have a new cycle of submissions, managed via Submittable. Submissions are open to everyone—our ideal is to publish established poets and new poets side-by-side.

new online writing workshop led by Jon Pearson
THE ABRACADABRA WRITING PROCESS
Creating what you say as you say it

starts January 8
and will take place on Thursdays
