Fun with crabs!

You know those crabs you see on the beach here in Virginia Beach - the ones that blend in with the sand? They are Atlantic ghost crabs! The Atlantic ghost crab’s latin name is Ocypode quadrata. Ocyopode translates to “Swift footed” and they certainly are - they can travel sideways at speeds up to 10 MPH!

These crustaceans only enter the water for developing eggs and to use their fine hairs to wick water up to moisten their gills. Ghost crabs are extremely terrestrial and create burrows in the sand that can reach up to four feet in length! Ghost Crabs are commonly seen from spring through fall in our area so be on the lookout when you are at the beach this summer.
