New Exhibiting Artist — Perry Kesting! 🎨✨

We’re excited to welcome Perry as an Exhibiting Artist at the Virginia Beach Art Center!

Mediums: ceramics

Styles: coastal, ancient Mediterranean, contemporary

Perry’s Why: As a lifelong artist, I can’t help but create! Sharing a piece of my inner world and my love of nature with people who appreciate it brings me immense joy. I love how ceramics brings together all the forms of nature, earth, water, and fire. My favorite part is throwing on the wheel. There’s something so satisfying about taking a lump of clay and slowly shaping it into something beautiful.

Check out Perry’s work here at the Virginia Beach Art Center!

New Exhibiting Artist Alert!!

We’re excited to highlight Kym Long-Wallace as a newly exhibiting artist at the Virginia Beach Art Center!

Mediums: Acrylic, mixed media, collage

Styles: Abstract, modern, minimalism

Kym’s Why: Art is the ultimate form of self-expression. I paint for me, and then I share it when I’m ready. What I am feeling and thinking on any particular day shows up in my work. If that work resonates with viewers, leads them to feel and think, I believe I have contributed to a positive ripple effect in the world. My process is 80–85% play and the balance is refinement. I keep the play as long as possible, trying not to dictate or judge, and this is what I enjoy most. The art leads me. After I sense that the piece is headed in its correct direction, I often let it sit for days or even weeks. Refinement comes last — tiny adjustments that add the finishing touches.

Be sure to check out Kym’s work here at the Virginia Beach Art Center! 💜

A message from our Education Manager, Vanessa Abbott:

I’ve been thinking about adulthood lately and I want to explore a thought. I think adulthood can flatten you. We stay in our lane. We color in the lines. These places feel comfortable. Within these walls there are so many things that make us feel like we excel. The people around us define us by all these excellent things.

Eventually we begin to feel like stepping outside of that box is risky. We begin to believe that there is embarrassment waiting on the other side of something new once you’ve already grown.

I have some good news for you my dear friend. This couldn’t be more wrong. Your willingness to be seen at the beginning of something reveals a beautiful softness in you. A softness that has not hardened into knowing. Not knowing is the path to discovering new things that light us up inside. Imagine picking up a paintbrush six months from today and saying , ‘This is who I am.’ I believe there is something you haven’t tried yet that is going to make you incredibly happy. And at the start.. it may just be a happiness in knowing you tried even though you didn’t know.

As we approach the end of this year, let’s allow ourselves to be seen at the beginning of something again.

We have curated a selection of courses for November at the VB Art Center that all hold space for this new beginning for you!

November classes are live! Browse and register for art classes at artcentervb.org.
