We usually focus on what Jesus taught, and why. But what can we learn from how he communicated?
John 4 can teach us a lot about engaging graciously across differences.
When Jesus met the Samaritan woman at the well, he crossed cultural and religious divides with patience, engagement, and acknowledgment of her lived experience.
This encounter models a posture we should take whenever we’re engaging with others at home, at church, or in the classroom.
1️⃣ Meeting people where they are
At the time Jesus encountered the Samaritan woman, deep divisions existed between Jews and Samaritans.
Yet Jesus met her where she was, listened, and brought her into meaningful dialogue.
2️⃣ Curiosity, not control
Jesus didn't shut down the Samaritan woman’s questions or correct her with force or shame.
Instead, he welcomed her questions, drew out her assumptions, and guided her toward a different way of thinking.
3️⃣ Engaging with dignity
It is important to note that Jesus spoke to the Samaritan woman in front of his disciples, who "were surprised to find him talking with a woman."
Jesus didn't only engage graciously in private. Despite cultural norms, Jesus showed respect for the Samaritan woman in front of those who may have treated her negatively because of her ethnicity and gender.
