Sometimes you have to slow down to really see the art. Look closely at the texture, patterns, colors and little details that make a handmade piece one of a kind. The next time you visit the Center, take your time. You might notice something you would have missed the first time around.

October is National Arts & Humanities Month, and we can't think of a better time to celebrate the people who keep South Carolina's creative traditions alive.

From traditional folk art to contemporary crafts, the work you find at the South Carolina Artisans Center represents the talent, creativity and stories of artists from across our state.

This month, take a little time to experience the arts, meet a maker, learn something new and bring a little South Carolina creativity home with you.

Every original work has a story. This one happens to have a personality, too.

Artist Libby Dickinson began making her “Bibby Bears” after becoming fascinated by the art of turning pieces of cloth into little personalities. Today, she carefully creates each bear using mohair and alpaca, designing all of the details herself.

No two bears are exactly alike, and that’s what makes them so special.

Sometimes, the frame is part of the art itself.

For painter Steve Bond, driftwood isn’t just a way to display his work. Each piece is carefully selected for its shape, character and the marks left behind by time in the marsh.

By pairing his paintings with found pieces of driftwood, Steve creates something that couldn’t be bought off a shelf or recreated exactly. Each frame, and painting, is completely one of a kind.
