On this day, April 3, 1776, the Continental Congress authorized privateers—privately owned ships granted permission to capture British vessels. Armed with “letters of marque,” these ships operated in a gray area between navy and piracy, targeting British trade and supply lines.

Privateers captured hundreds of British ships during the Revolutionary War, disrupting supply chains and bringing valuable cargo back to American ports. For many crews, the mission blended patriotism with opportunity; success meant both aiding the cause and sharing in the profits.
