Did you know? Our hometown Warren has a fascinating history! The Club Gay Paree on Catfish (Elm St) in Warren, AR was on the “The Chitlin' Circuit”, which was a network of performance venues throughout the eastern, southern, and upper Midwest regions of the United States that allowed Black musicians, comedians, and entertainers to perform safely during the Jim Crow era of racial segregation. Alongside resources like the Negro Motorist Green Book, “The Chitlin' Circuit” provided safe spaces where African American artists could comfortably eat, sleep, and perform without enduring the indignities of mainstream segregated businesses. Gwen Bullard will present the history of these black businesses in Warren and the black American settlers in Bradley County of the 1920s and 30s who owned these businesses on Catfish. The presentation will be held at The Bradley County Historical Museum-Warren, AR on Sunday, June 7 at 2 PM.

Today, we honor legendary educator and Bradley County icon Thomas Brunson and Bradley County High School. Mr. Brunson spent 34 years in both the Bradley County High School and Warren Schools. He led the schools through integration and years later Westside School and the street it sits on were named after him. Although the school closed several years ago, the Bradley County Medical Center now occupies the facility as the Brunson Medical Complex and houses the BCMC Home Health Agency, Physical and Occupational Therapy, The BCMC Auxiliary Thrift store and several other hospital operations. This article appeared in a 1984 edition of The Eagle Democrat and honors the legacy of Mr. Brunson.
