🧵 Victorian Childhood Preserved 🎀
Meet one of the Sutliff Museum’s most charming residents: this bisque-faced doll, believed to have once belonged to Phebe Temperance Sutliff herself.

With her glass eyes, detailed lace dress, and delicately sculpted features, this doll reflects the craftsmanship of the late 19th century. Bisque dolls like this were highly prized for their lifelike appearance, making them both treasured toys and status symbols in Victorian homes.

Today, she stands as a quiet witness to a bygone era of elaborate childhoods, genteel expectations, and the evolving role of girls and women in American society.

Just a few months later, in November 1971, the Sutliff Museum opened its doors inside the library — marking the beginning of over 50 years of local history preservation.
