Look closer. ✦

Concentric rings of color pressed on raw wood. Bold chevrons and brushstrokes colliding across the canvas. Translucent petals layered until they hold their own light. Paint built so thick it becomes topography. Rust, chain, and ceramic nested like found memory.

The exhibition is on view through June 13, come see the texture for yourself.

Meet Gary Heise — Spotlight Artist in the current exhibition on view at Imago Foundation for the Arts.

Working in ink and watercolor on delicate xuan rice paper, Heise’s paintings draw from the traditions of Chinese brush painting and Japanese sumi-e while exploring landscape through atmosphere, texture, and gesture. Beginning with layered monoprints in Chinese black ink, his works emerge as sensory impressions of shifting environments rather than literal scenes.

A graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, Heise has developed a distinctive practice bridging Eastern and Western painting traditions for over four decades. He currently serves as Administrative Director at the East Side Art Center in Pawtucket, where he also teaches Chinese ink and watercolor techniques.

The walls are still full. ✦

If you were at the opening, you already know. If you missed it, this is your reminder.

Our current group exhibition is on view through June 13, and every corner of the gallery deserves a visit. This show brings together distinct voices and practices: Carl Keitner’s deeply personal black-and-white photographs of Hungary, alongside ink and watercolor landscapes, layered spray compositions, and experimental photographic works that together create something greater than the sum of their parts.

Meet Carl Keitner – the Featured Artist in our new group exhibition now on view at IMAGO Gallery in Warren, RI.

Born in Budapest in 1945, Keitner emigrated to Canada with his family following the failed Hungarian uprising of 1956. Nearly seven decades later, at age 80, he returned to Hungary with a camera – retracing a journey that began in childhood and had never quite left him. The black-and-white photographs in this exhibition document the people and places he encountered, and the quiet reckoning that came with going back.

Keitner’s work is rooted in a lifelong commitment to black-and-white photography and a sustained attention to his subjects – from the streets of Providence to eight extended visits to Cuba. This new body of work is among his most personal.

The exhibition also features IFA Spotlight Artist Gary Heise, Guest Artist GIFFA, and additional IFA artists working across ink, watercolor, spray paint, and experimental photographic processes.

📅 On view: May 7 – June 13
