Curator's Favorite(s):

Broken Promises
Acrylic, Oil on Canvas
60.96 x 60.96 cm (24 x 24 in.)

Curator's Note:

To feel nostalgic for an artist a generation removed from me is proof that age is, in many ways, just a human construct. I am a product of the “No Child Left Behind” era, equally shaped by Venice Beach retreats, SKA-fueled "Ragers" in Laguna, the Limp Bizkit phenom, KROQ, and the love story that was Gavin and Gwen. As a Los Angeleno, Cabada’s work pulls me back to riding the 33 down to Muscle Beach in an LAUSD uniform on skip day, with No Doubt blaring through a Discman. Each piece feels like a fellow passenger on that ride—someone caught between a carefree dream and the edge of a social nightmare. Is that Keanu Reeves?

Things That Impress:

Clean Presentation. Technical ex*****on. Organization and Storytelling. Color depth. Nostalgia.

For Collectors:

Collectors drawn to Sabrina Cabada’s work are likely to value paintings that feel instantly familiar and quietly unruly: color-saturated portraits where vintage memory, pop culture, feminine gesture, and contemporary confidence all sit in the same room. Her subjects are not polished archetypes; they feel like characters caught between an ordinary afternoon and a private mythology—playful, defiant, vulnerable, stylish, and fully aware of being seen. Cabada offers work with strong visual presence and emotional accessibility: pieces that can hold a room through color and pattern, while still rewarding a closer look through narrative, attitude, and nostalgia. Her mediums range from original acrylic and oil paintings to prints and smaller-format pieces.

Still Singing While It Burns, 2026
Acrylic, Oil Pastel on Unstretched Canvas
101.6 x 76.2 cm (40 x 30 in.)

This piece carries a heavy, layered narrative—one that holds faith, history, survival, and contradiction all at once. At the center, a group travels across water in a small boat, evoking movement, migration, and endurance. The figure in red, eyes closed and holding a Bible, feels anchored in devotion—singing, praying, or holding onto belief as a source of strength. The surrounding figures suggest community, but also quiet tension—each person turned inward in their own way.

In the background, the “praise house” sits elevated above the water, hinting at tradition, refuge, and spiritual grounding. Yet on the right side, fire rises—bright, consuming, impossible to ignore. The presence of the hooded figure introduces a direct confrontation with historical violence and oppression, creating a stark contrast against the faith-centered imagery.

The composition creates a visual and emotional divide: water and worship on one side, fire and threat on the other. Yet they exist in the same space, suggesting that for many, faith and danger, hope and harm, have always coexisted.

Still Singing While It Burns speaks to resilience in the face of contradiction—the ability to hold onto belief, identity, and voice even when surrounded by forces meant to silence or destroy.

Grow More Than You Were Given, 2026
Acrylic, Oil Pastel on Unstretched Canvas
101.6 x 76.2 cm (40 x 30 in.)

This piece blooms with resilience, transformation, and quiet power. The figure sits rooted yet expansive, wrapped in an eruption of color that feels both protective and expressive—like growth that refuses to be contained. The camouflage hat suggests adaptation and survival, while the vibrant flowers cascading across the body speak to softness, beauty, and renewal emerging from lived experience.

The phrase “Grow More Flowers” anchors the work as both instruction and affirmation. It suggests a choice—to cultivate something abundant even in environments that may not have been designed for it. The surrounding bursts of stars and swirling color create a dreamlike atmosphere, as if the figure exists between worlds: grounded, yet reaching toward something brighter.

The boots at the base reinforce this sense of journey and endurance—feet planted, ready to move, to build, to continue. Meanwhile, the butterfly and greenery hint at transformation and cycles of becoming.

Altogether, this work is about growth as resistance, beauty as strength, and the radical act of choosing to flourish beyond limitation.

Lauren Bessette

Curator's Favorite(s):

It is hard to name a single favorite from the show. Bessette’s sculptural works invite that kind of greed, especially where they echo the energy of her Free Form Collection. As an individual collector, I would gravitate toward the Little Gems Collection (not presented at FEMME) for its compact scale and ability to hold a room without overwhelming it.

Little Gems Collection
Sand, Acrylic, Polymer, Pigment
15.24 x 15.24 cm (6 x 6 in.)

Curator's Note:

It took me a day or so to find the right language for Bessette’s work other than "wall sculpture art". Then, somewhere between a stress alert on my watch and a chai latte, it came to me: Colorful Brutalism. At the fair, my first thought was of Miodrag Zivkovic’s monument to the Battle of Sutjeska brought down to an intimate, livable scale through sand, pigment, and color. Bessette’s work carries that same boldness but trades industrial severity for something more soulful, beautiful, rugged, uncompromising, and deeply alive.

Things That Impress:

Presentation. Technical ex*****on. Meaningful use of materials. Color depth. Aesthetics.

For Collectors:

Collectors drawn to Lauren Bessette’s work are likely to value pieces that sit confidently between fine art, design, and the built environment. Her use of color, material, and form may especially resonate with collectors interested in contemporary design objects, art-forward interiors, and works that carry the polish of a trained studio practice while retaining the energy of a maker’s hand. Pride Is the Pulse, 2026
Acrylic, Oil Pastel, Mix Media on Unstretched Canvas
101.6 x 76.2 cm (40 x 30 in.)

This piece moves with a rhythm you can almost feel—steady, insistent, alive. The figure stands at the center like a heartbeat made visible, surrounded by waves of saturated color that seem to vibrate outward. Pride here isn’t quiet or decorative; it’s foundational. It’s the pulse that keeps everything in motion.

The spray-painted cross stencils over the eyes create a layered tension—part shield, part signal. They suggest both protection and interruption, hinting at the ways identity is shaped under pressure, yet never fully silenced. Even without clear sight, the figure radiates awareness, presence, and control.

The handwritten words across the chest ground the piece in declaration, while the drips and raw textures give it a sense of urgency—like something that had to be said, had to be seen. The surrounding colors—bold yellows, deep blues, electric purples—carry both joy and intensity, echoing a lived experience that is complex, resilient, and expressive.

Pride Is the Pulse speaks to identity as something that cannot be muted or removed. It lives in the body, in the voice, in the way one stands and takes up space. It is constant, sustaining, and undeniable.

Seeing Through the Noise, 2026
Acrylic, Oil Pastel Sticks on Unstretched Canvas
43.18 x 27.94 cm (17 x 11 in.)

Seeing Through the Noise presents a vivid portrait shaped by layers of color, distortion, and clarity. The figure’s face is fragmented by bold strokes of pink, blue, and orange, suggesting interruption—moments where identity is influenced, obscured, or redefined by external forces. One eye remains open and sharply aware, while the other is partially closed, hinting at both protection and selective perception.

Radiating lines from the crown of the head suggest thought, awareness, or inner light—contrasting with the chaotic marks that move across the face. The blue background, marked with faint text and gestures, evokes the constant presence of outside voices, expectations, and noise. Yet the figure remains centered, grounded, and present.

The layered paint and visible texture reinforce the idea that clarity is not immediate—it is something built through experience. The grass at the base anchors the figure in growth and resilience, reminding us that even in confusion, there is grounding and life.

This work reflects on perception—how we navigate a world full of influence, distraction, and pressure, while still trying to see clearly and remain true to ourselves. It asks what it means to focus, to filter, and to truly see through the noise.

It Won’t All Wash Away™ Exhibition Hoodie by Britnee Scott

More than a sweatshirt, It Won’t All Wash Away™ is a statement of resilience, memory, and survival. Inspired by Brit Scott's signature blend of contemporary folk art, graffiti aesthetics, and social storytelling, this design reminds us that our experiences—both painful and beautiful—leave lasting marks that shape who we become.

Featuring a bold portrait framed by symbols of freedom, identity, and hope, the artwork is layered with expressive color, urban textures, and a soaring white dove. The phrase "It Won't All Wash Away" serves as a powerful reflection on healing: while time may soften wounds, it does not erase our stories, our histories, or our strength.

Four Women (Framed), 2026
Yarn on Monks Cloth
59.69 x 48.26 cm (23.5 x 19 in.)

Curator's Note:

There is something warm, ancestral, and quietly familiar in Bri Pippens’ work. It’s the kind of familiarity that feels like walking back into a room you did not realize you missed. At first glance, the pieces charm with color and composition; a moment later, the texture begins to speak. In Evergreen and Four Women, detail becomes atmosphere: the patience of an elementary school teacher guiding cursive across a page, the Sunday ease of my mother and her friend Mable catching up in soft laughter, and the trusted gossip room tucked inside my academic advisor’s office at Howard University. These works do not simply depict figures or scenes; they hold the feeling of being shaped by women, rooms, rituals, and stories that stay with us.

Things That Impress:

Detail. Presentation. Technical ex*****on. Sheet-material framing. Dimensional texture. Punch needle craftsmanship.

For Collectors:

Collectors drawn to Bri Pippens’ work are likely to value contemporary fiber art with emotional depth, cultural specificity, and a strong sense of hand. Her work may resonate with collectors of Black contemporary art, women-centered narratives, memory-based storytelling, textile and craft-informed practices, and pieces that bring warmth, texture, and intimacy into a space. It is especially well suited for collectors who want art that feels personal, polished, and alive in the room. Remember, fiber art requires TLC, and Bri includes care instructions in her online shop: https://www.bananapeppersart.com/shop/originals.

What Falls Can Still Grow, 2026
Acrylic, Oil Pastel on Unstretched Canvas
Canvas: 92.71 x 76.2 cm (36.5 x 30 in.)
Frame: 122.56 x 92.71 cm (48.25 x 36.5 in.)

This piece reimagines descent—not as loss, but as transformation—now grounded in history and legacy. A Tuskegee-inspired aircraft moves across the sky, referencing the Tuskegee Airmen, whose service reshaped what was possible in the face of exclusion and adversity. Here, the plane does not carry destruction. Instead, it releases a cascade of flowers—an offering, a rewriting.

The contrast is intentional: a symbol of war transformed into a vessel of growth. The muted strength of the aircraft gives way to an explosion of color—each bloom representing resilience, dignity, and the power to redefine purpose. What once marked conflict becomes a gesture of renewal.

The open sky creates space for this shift, while the layered florals below feel like history taking root—beauty emerging from struggle, legacy turning into life. The work honors not only the past, but the act of reinterpretation itself: choosing to see power not just in force, but in what can be created afterward.

What Falls Can Still Grow becomes a meditation on legacy—how even within systems built for harm, there exists the potential to carry something forward that heals, expands, and blooms.

It Won’t All Wash Away™ x What Falls Can Still Grow Exhibition Tee

These shirts tell a story of movement, freedom, and becoming. The airplane represents the courage to leave familiar ground—to rise, explore, and move toward something greater. Beneath it, a field of vibrant flowers represents everything that continues to grow: beauty, struggle, memory, identity, and possibility.

Among the roses, she remains fierce and free—not defined by where you came from, but by where you choose to go.

The flowers remind us that growth doesn't always happen in perfect conditions. Sometimes you bloom through the chaos. Sometimes you grow where you weren't expected to. And sometimes, becoming who you are requires the courage to take flight.

• Wear the story.
• Wear the freedom.
• Wear what continues to grow.

“In a Field of Roses” — for the wildflowers who refuse to stop blooming. Brit Scott
