Stable STABLE provides affordable and sustainable studio space, and collaborating with local, national, and The city’s economy is booming and DC continues to grow.

Washington, DC is an international city with a robust history of energetic, talented visual artists. This expansion puts pressure on the arts community - over the past decade artist studio buildings and art venues have steadily closed, many artists choose to leave Washington DC due to the perceived lack of opportunity, the high cost of living and the shortage of affordable work space. In order for

Washington to be a dynamic, cultural capital we need for the creative community to keep pace with the city; we need to support and encourage our artists to stay AND we need to entice more artists to bring their intelligence, drive, and resources to the city. MISSION
STABLE’s mission is to strengthen Washington, DC’s contemporary visual arts community by providing affordable and sustainable studio space, an engaged, diverse artist community and access to local, national, and international audiences through partnerships, programming and exhibitions.VISION
We envision STABLE becoming an active space for artists in DC and beyond. STABLE aims to change the arts landscape in DC by supporting a creative economy where visual artists not only remain in the city, but thrive. VALUES

If you know what we know, you better arrive early for Hadiya’s first solo art show titled, Between Starshine & Clay.

In this show Hadiya’s work continues to evolve via a collection of ceramic lighting and generative works that look at memory and material through experimentation. Drawing on the aesthetics of mid-century and Black modernist traditions, this body of work reflects Hadiya’s continued interest in form and function, nostalgia, and the healing power of craft.

The title, pulled from Lucille Clifton’s poem “won’t you celebrate with me,” speaks to a metaphorical space between the cosmic and the terrestrial—a liminal place where Hadiya exists and creates. It’s in this in-between that her work takes shape. These lamps offer illumination and invite clarity, spirituality, and grounding.

Join us for the opening reception at Art of Noize on Saturday May 10th, from 3 - 6 PM.

New mosaic sculptures from Andy Yoder:

"I see these as relics, objects dug out of landfills in the distant future that we’ll be remembered by. I love all the history associated with mosaic; it reminds me of stained glass, or jade burial masks made by the Aztecs."

Recent work by artist, Molly Springfield:

Molly Springfield makes graphite drawings that use photocopies of printed texts as their source material.

She asks how key moments within the history of information and reproduction fundamentally transform how we experience language: in art (19th-century trompe l’oeil, 1960s Conceptual art’s use of the Xerox), in literature (practices of translation and transcription), and in technology (the digitization of texts, the rise of e-readership).

Please enjoy a peek at STABLE artist, Nicole Maloof's studio and current WIP.

Maloof, diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when she was 4 years old, creates sculptures and paintings inspired by her experiences living with an autoimmune disease. She uses conventional art materials including plaster, resin and acrylic paint, in combination with used medical supplies, hard candy and Jell-O in order to explore the way material manipulation can alter the read of an object. Her alteration and transformation of materials mimics the transformation that occurs within her own body when synthetic insulin is administered and sugar is absorbed from the bloodstream into the cells.

Throughout the artworks, there is an overwhelming sense of collection, material and excess. Hundreds of repeating shapes pile upon each other highlighting the sheer amount of these items she has used in her life. This begins to touch on medical waste, the burden that those with autoimmune diseases exist with every day, and the fragility of our bodies without modern science. The sculptures are simultaneously playful and twisted, seductive and repulsive based on their outer appearance and deeper meaning.

Please join STABLE artist, Paula Mans at IA&A at Hillyer this evening at 6:15 pm for an artist talk, moderated by Dr. Lauren Davidson , on the occasion of her solo exhibition, "Cotton Flower."

The “Cotton Flower” series uses portraiture to center Black women in historical discourse surrounding enslaved resistance. In slave societies, power was constructed through the use of race and gender. Enslaved women were exploited not only for their labor but also for their capacity to sustain the workforce through childbirth. The persistent threat of sexualized violence and forced familial separation pushed some women to subvert reproduction by engaging in bold acts of resistance. On cotton plantations, in particular, some enslaved women chose to ingest cotton roots to prevent pregnancy and induce abortions. By asserting their bodily autonomy, these Black women insurgents directly challenged the slave economy. In an effort to reconcile with and transform the profound pain of this history into power, the “Cotton Flower” series re-envisions cotton plants as symbols of gendered resistance—instruments powerfully wielded by enslaved Black women to circumvent systems of oppression and fight for selfhood.
