On May 22, 1863, War Department General Order No. 143 officially established the Bureau of Colored Troops, creating a formal system for the recruitment, organization, and training of African American soldiers in the newly formed United States Colored Troops (USCT). More than 200,000 men would answer the call to serve, forever changing the course of American history.

“Before the Movement Had a Name: Civil Rights from the American Revolution to the Modern Movement.”

🎓 Earn 38 hours of professional development

This week-long seminar explores the long struggle for civil rights in America using primary sources, historic sites, and scholarship. Designed for educators teaching grades 3–12 and college level, the program examines how ideas of liberty, citizenship, and equality have evolved from the Revolutionary era to today.
