Our programs focus on cultivating each person’s innate ability to heal, helping participants explore meaning and maintain hope—even in the face of life’s challenges. We offer classes, wellness programs, and lectures at our U Street center that encourage wellness for the whole person: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Join us for healthy cooking and nutrition classes, creative arts worksh

ops, therapeutic yoga and stress reduction, as well as lectures and talks with experts. We also offer weeklong and one-day integrative healing retreats for people with cancer. Join us at our program space on U Street to learn more about our work and to tour the Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery - our nonprofit gallery space that features exhibitions that explore community, global, and personal healing. Smith Center also runs several community programs, including a Community Patient Navigation Program and an Integrative Patient Navigation Training for new and experienced navigators and a hospital-based Artist-in-Residence program at Walter Reed.

Our supporters are the reason our doors are always open💙

Because of donors like you, people facing cancer can find community, support, and connection when they need it most.

When Stacie was diagnosed with breast cancer, she knew she couldn’t do it alone. After struggling to find spaces where she felt seen and supported, she spoke up — helping inspire a partnership between Smith Center and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital to create a support group specifically for Black women with breast cancer.

Today, Stacie is cancer-free and continues showing up for others the way others showed up for her.

Every gift helps create spaces where no one has to face cancer alone. Thank you for helping us keep the door open for the next person who needs us.

Help us continue this work by making a gift today. Your donation brings hope, healing, and community to those who need it most: https://smithcenter.org/giving/spring/?utm_source=spring-appeal&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=5-28-26.

Cancer impacts more than the body. It can change the way a person sees themselves, their relationships, and their future.

At Smith Center, we believe emotional healing matters too. Through support groups, creative arts, movement, and connection, people facing cancer can find community, comfort, and hope when they need it most.

Your support helps make those moments possible for every person who walks through our doors. Help us reach our $100,000 goal: https://smithcenter.org/giving/spring/?utm_source=spring-appeal&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=5-20-26&blm_aid=2873664513&utm_content=link_in_bio&fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQPOTM2NjE5NzQzMzkyNDU5AAGnFXl2kzohWZ_6WGU2XbIKiFLhnJ7x86hDhkyVIWyxgcI3TM-uS5CFd94GYW8_aem_1yg_5IBn31Sr1J_cjN1-uw.

Looking to boost your vitamin C during cancer treatment?

Vitamin C supports your immune system and helps your body heal. You’ll find it in colorful foods like oranges, strawberries, bell peppers, and broccoli. Try adding citrus slices to water, tossing berries into oatmeal, or roasting some peppers with dinner. Every bite adds a little extra support!

When Ruth was diagnosed with cancer, she had an exceptional medical team, but she still felt profoundly alone. Fear. Anger. Isolation. Those were hers to carry.

Then she found Smith Center.

What began as a retreat became a lifeline: a community that understood, a space to heal emotionally, and creative expression that helped her find her voice again.

“Smith Center was my emotional treatment. It was my mental health journey, and it was transformational.”

Today, eight years after her diagnosis, Ruth is thriving and giving back to the same community that supported her.

“I could not be the person I am today without Smith Center. And I love me.”

Stories like Ruth’s are why this work matters. Every gift helps ensure that no one facing cancer has to carry the emotional burden alone.

Help us reach our $100,000 goal and be there for the next person who needs us💙

🍴🥗🍎 Food for Thought: Monthly Nutrition Tips brought to you by Savor Health🍴🥗🍎

Are you drinking enough fluids during treatment? Most adults need at least 64 ounces of fluids per day. Staying hydrated is important as it regulates body temperature, supports digestion, helps to flush out the waste, boosts energy and supports healing and recovery. If you don’t like the taste of plain water or are experiencing taste changes during treatment, try adding lemons, limes, cucumber or mint to make it more flavorful!

🍴🥗🍎 Food for Thought: Monthly Nutrition Tips brought to you by Savor Health🍴🥗🍎

Acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) is when stomach acid travels up the esophagus and causes symptoms like heartburn or burning in the chest area. If you are experiencing acid reflux, it is good to avoid spicy foods, acidic foods such as citrus, tomato sauce, alcohol, caffeine and carbonated drinks. Consider elevating the head of your bed, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding tight fitting clothing. Eating smaller, more frequent meals and staying upright after eating can also help.
