The term "Massive Resistance" was coined by U.S. Senator Harry F. Byrd Sr., a conservative Democrat and former governor. Byrd's strong opposition to federal intervention in state affairs and his racial views resonated with his supporters in Southside Virginia, driving the movement.
The documentary "Locked Out: The Fall of Massive Resistance," produced by the University of Virginia Center for Politics and WCVE PBS Richmond, premiered at the Robert Russa Moton Museum 15 years ago.
