Presenting a selection of 17 works drawn from a larger traveling exhibition, IA&A will tour the show nationally and internationally from 2027 to 2031. Cajamarca comes from a series of paintings in which Fernando de Szyszlo evokes the ex*****on of the last Inca ruler, Atahualpa (1533). Thick, gestural black stripes suggest the body of Atahualpa, and fields of intense reds, purples, and blues unfold in a dense, archaic chromatic register. These elements create a charged visual field where form and color carry symbolic weight, transforming historical memory into abstraction. The painting’s emotional gravity lies not in representation or judgment, but in evocation. Through Cajamarca, Szyszlo reimagines historical painting within a modernist language, merging international abstraction with indigenous cultural memory.

Candido Portinari’s work Return from the Fair depicts an Afro-Brazilian woman and her five daughters moving through a nocturnal scene of communal celebration. Details such as the scarecrow, a red umbrella, white dresses with blue sashes, floral hair ornaments, and glowing lanterns point to the Festa de São João, a popular annual celebration marking the end of the rainy season and the beginning of the harvest. Through this vibrant portrayal of Black and biracial (mixed European and African ancestry) rural life, Portinari presents a modernist vision of brasilidade (Brazilianness) rooted in the dignity, labor, and cultural traditions of the Brazilian people.

Hilda Crovo has exhibited her works since 1964, with one-woman exhibitions in Argentina, Colombia, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Venezuela, and the United States. Her works are found in museum collections in Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, and Colombia.

“Crovo’s impassioned forms and colors are strikingly like those of Washington painter Sylvia Snowden minus the latter’s impasto. Thrusting and cascading across Crovo’s canvases, gestures meet interlocking swirls. Fields of white tinged with creamy curlicues like foamy eddies under a waterfall, press against deep blue, red and black with a sureness any artist would envy.”

— The Washington Post; August 27, 1994
