Looking forward to it, four days left!

Today's Alan's Choice will highlight another photograph you'll see at the DC Fine Art Photography Fair.

Edward Weston wasn’t interested in the exotic…unless you think of Tina Modotti as exotic, which I do. He traveled, and photographed mostly in California (certainly enough there to keep anyone busy), but more often he kept to within 200 yards of his house near Point Lobos. He had nothing against the domestic, and certainly seemed to like vegetables.

He felt that it wasn’t important what he photographed, but the way he photographed it that transformed the commonplace to the truly transcendent…and there’s hardly anything more common than cabbage. Unless you choose a leaf whose ribbing, when you light it just so leaves you astonished as now you can truly see the beauty of its form, the miracle of it’s structure. It’s as graceful as a fully plumed swan, settling onto the surface of a lake, or a ballerina dancing Tchaikovsky. It’s easy to get lost in its luminosity, and meditative grace, and just as easy to fry it up with some potatoes and onions, which he also did.

During this year's fair on Saturday from 11am-noon there will be a panel: "On Collecting Photography: Advice from the Experts" featuring Alan Klotz of the Alan Klotz Gallery, Sarah Kennel, Associate Photography Curator at the National Gallery of Art and Tim Hyde, photographer and private collector. The discussion is free and open to the public and will be a great mix of advice from a gallery point of view, a museum curator point of view, and a photographer and private collector.
