A model of Federal-period architecture in the nation’s capital, Tudor Place was home to six generations of Martha Washington’s descendants from 1805 to 1983 and the enslaved workers and servants who lived and worked here. With thousands of decorative objects, including the largest Washington Collection outside of Mount Vernon, Tudor Place sits on 5 ½ acres in the heart of Georgetown.

🎃 Trick or Treat at Tudor Place is back!

Calling all little ghosts, goblins and superheroes! Bring your kids for a morning of trick-or-treating in our gardens, with candy and surprises waiting along the way. There will be crafts, games and face painting for the kids, plus coffee and c***r for the grown-ups. 🍂

We were delighted to welcome the Georgetown Garden Club to Tudor Place for a garden tour, featuring a talk by Ana, Director of Buildings, Gardens & Grounds, and a visit to our special exhibition, Founding Fortunes: The Estate Sale of Martha Washington.

Then the club turned their visit into art: for this week’s Flower Show, members created arrangements inspired by Tudor Place. Our team was thrilled to see them in person! 🌿

We’re proud to be featured in the Washington Business Journal's Women Who Mean Business issue! 📰

Tudor Place served as the backdrop for this year’s honoree portraits, including the cover, photographed at our south lawn’s temple portico. The issue’s “About the Space” feature shares the history of the house, home to six generations of Martha Washington’s descendants, and our 5½ acres of gardens.

We’re especially proud to congratulate our Executive Director, Mary-Frances Wain, on being named one of this year’s distinguished honorees. 👏

When we picture the American Revolution, we usually see 13 colonies facing off against the British Crown. But that’s only half the story. 🌍

Made in China, this punch bowl in Tudor Place’s Washington Collection reminds us that the world of the American Revolution was already connected across oceans through trade.

He’ll show how the war that founded the United States reached across six continents, from the sugar fields of the Caribbean to the court of the King of Mysore, and from refugee camps on the Canadian frontier to uprisings in Sierra Leone and Peru.

It redrew maps, toppled hierarchies, set people in motion, and fueled new movements for both liberty and empire.

Bell is Professor of History at the University of Maryland. His book of the same name won the 2025 Journal of the American Revolution Book of the Year Award.

Our regular Tuesday – Saturday schedule returns in 2027.

🖼️ Peter Waddell, our Artist-In-Residence, joins us for a talk on painting the past – how a historic house becomes a painting, and how a person of the past becomes a portrait.

🏛️ Art from the Archive brings you the artist behind the paintings. We’ll look at Armistead Peter 3rd’s life as an artist – where he trained, who he learned from, and the subjects he returned to again and again across nearly 50 years of painting this house and garden.

🎨 Then bring your own brush to it. Inspired by Armistead Peter 3rd, paint your own historic watercolor on the South Lawn and take it home with you.

“I was but a child of twelve years old.”

Britannia Peter Kennon, seated at left, remembered summer evenings at Tudor Place: visitors arriving by carriage, the pleasure of familiar company, and a yellow carriage waiting beneath the locust tree near the box circle.

Britannia was Tudor Place’s longest-tenured owner. Born while James Madison was president, she lived to 95, long enough to witness the arrival of electric light, the telephone, and the automobile.

Her letters, papers, household accounts, and receipts from 1860 to 1911 offer an intimate record of life at Tudor Place across more than half a century.
But Britannia belongs to this history not only as a subject. 𝐒𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞 ✍️

In the 1890s, her grandchildren began asking what she remembered, and they wrote down her recollections. Much of what we know about the first century of this house reaches us through the memory of a woman in her eighties.
It is a reminder that history does not live only in documents and objects. Sometimes, it survives because someone remembered.

We have spent the past few days — weeks, really — rolling up our sleeves to find new ways of opening our collection to friends in Georgetown and afar.

This photograph sleeve from our archive, dating to the early 1900s, reminds us how differently we once documented, stored, and preserved memories.

It came back from the shop still holding someone’s negatives, printed with a KODAK advertisement on one side and, on the other, a table explaining how to expose a photograph on a bright afternoon. (It even tells you to hold your breath!)

In a collection the size of ours, everyday objects like this can tell us stories that the treasures don’t: the material life of a memory, the time it took to make a photograph, and the care it took to preserve one.

Everyday objects are how we keep people.

Our series Tudor Tots welcomes early learners, aged 18 months to four years old, and their caregivers to discover what kinds of plants grow in our historic garden while enjoying a story time, songs, nature at its finest, and a hands-on art project.
