Christopher Payne (American, born 1968) spent a decade photographing America’s factories. Some rely on handcraft and have remained proudly unchanged over decades; others offer a glimpse inside spaces where engineers and technicians work side-by-side with robots to push the limits of technology. With each image, Payne captures the essence of the work, ensuring that his images convey useful information about complex machines and recognize the grace and craftmanship of skilled makers.

The Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service will begin traveling “Made in America: The Industrial Photography of Christopher Payne” on a national tour in fall 2026!

On Sunday, October 18 don’t miss Smithsonian Institution’s Distinguished Scholar and Ambassador-at-Large Richard Kurin discussing his new book, “History by a Hair: Thomas Jefferson, Sally Hemings & Solving a 200-Year-Old Mystery.”

“History by a Hair,” recently featured in the The New York Times, is the definitive account of how a discarded strand of hair found in Thomas Jefferson’s Bible at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History led to a sweeping, multi-year genomic investigation, drawing on technological advances in DNA to finally resolve a 200-year national controversy.

Free program starts at 3 pm. Signing to follow with copies for sale from Scuppernong Books.

⚾️ In the 20th century, for young Mexican American women, barrio baseball teams provided an acceptable public venue for them to assert autonomy, athleticism and ethnic pride while challenging socially constructed notions of gender. Here, Carmen Lujan stands on base in Colton, CA in 1936.

Lujan played for the Mercury Señoritas for five years, starting at the age of 12 or 13. They traveled to play other women’s barrio teams. Learn more about Latinas in baseball in our “ ¡Pleibol! In the Barrios and the Big Leagues / En los barrios y las grandes ligas” exhibition on view now at our Smithsonian Affiliate, the Charlotte Museum of History!

Our ¡Pleibol! In the Barrios and the Big Leagues / En los barrios y las grandes ligas exhibition explores how generations of Latinos/as have helped make the game what it is today. From youth and community teams to the Major League, the exhibition reveals how baseball brings people together regardless of race, class, or gender. These inspirational baseball stories reflect larger themes in American history that connect us all, on and off the diamond.
