On this Memorial Day we pay tribute to all those who gave their lives to defend and protect our cherished democracy, we honor their sacrifices and express our gratitude.

We also honor the more than one million Italian Americans who served during WW II. Their service in our nation’s Armed Forces not only paved the way for a new generation of military leaders of Italian heritage, but more broadly opened the door for Italian Americans to rise to leadership positions and achieve American success stories that were long overdue.

We share with you here several images of local Italian American soldiers during WWII. The photos are on display at our Italian American Museum of Washington DC.

34 years ago today, on May 23, 1992, Judge Giovanni Falcone was diabolically assassinated by the Mafia. Many suffered the same fate before and after him, but Falcone’s death became a historic turning point. It was the moment when the people of Italy and the Italian government stood up and said “enough.”

Thanks to Judge Falcone’s lasting legacy, law enforcement institutions are better equipped and more determined than ever to combat corruption and protect victims. His courage lives on.

We remember him, in Washington DC with a memorial mass at Holy Rosary Church and civic ceremony at the Italian American Museum of Washington DC.

As the late Justice Scalia once said, Judge Falcone “had stepped forward to do what good men had to do. All good causes have their martyrs. Falcone became a martyr to the cause of justice. Glory and honor to his name.”

The Board of Directors of the Italian American Museum of Washington, D.C. extends its warmest congratulations to Archbishop Gabriele Giordano Caccia, who earlier this week presented his credentials at the White House as the new Apostolic Nuncio to the United States.

At a reception yesterday marking the first anniversary of the election of Pope Leo XIV, held at the Apostolic Nunciature, Archbishop Caccia delivered remarks that blended insight with gentle humor.

Reflecting on the nation’s upcoming milestone, he observed:
“As the United States marks a very important 250th anniversary of its founding, we can give thanks for the ideals of freedom, responsibility, and human dignity that have shaped the nation’s history, and which continue to call for the Church’s service to the common good.”

Archbishop Caccia, 68, brings decades of diplomatic and pastoral experience to his new role. He previously served as Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations beginning in 2019. He succeeds Cardinal Christophe Pierre, 80, who served as Apostolic Nuncio to the United States since 2016.

The Museum celebrates Archbishop Caccia’s appointment and looks forward to continued collaboration with the Apostolic Nunciature in promoting cultural understanding, historical preservation, and the contributions that Italian immigrants have made to this Nation.

We thank the Apostolic Nunciature for inviting the President of the IAMDC to join in the celebration.
