250 years ago today, soldier John Fisher put pen to paper on what would become known as the Battle of Long Island.

“. . . thair was as smart a fire as perhaps ever was for some time . . .”

Fisher kept writing in the days that followed, recording his experience of the battle as it unfolded around him. His diary offers a rare, firsthand window into one of the war’s earliest major engagements.

📖 Author Talk: “A Nation Unraveled” with Sarah Jones Weicksel
Friday, September 18 | 5–7 PM | DAR Museum

Join us for an evening with historian and AHA executive director Sarah Jones Weicksel, author of “A Nation Unraveled: Clothing, Culture, and Violence in the American Civil War Era.” Her book explores how clothing carried the weight of allegiance, loss, and survival during the Civil War.

The evening includes a talk, Q&A, and book signing, with refreshments before and after. Limited books available for purchase.

Introducing a new series of curator-led tours! Once a month, join us in the main gallery at the DAR Museum for a guided tour of “Revolution in Their Words” led by Curator and Registrar, Carrie Blough.

Our first tour is Wednesday, August 26 from 12:00–12:30pm, perfect for a lunch break out. Free and open to the public, space is limited so register today!

Calling all Girl Scout troops in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area! The DAR Museum offers hands-on badge programs designed to bring history to life for your scouts.
 
Brownies can earn their “My Family Story” badge by exploring how family histories are collected and preserved, hearing how stories change over time, and creating their own family tree. Juniors can earn the “Playing the Past” badge by stepping back into 1913 to join the Women’s Suffrage March, crafting their own “Votes for Women” sash, and writing a speech on why the right to vote matters.
 
Programs are offered at 10:30am and 1:30pm, with a minimum of 8 scouts. Weekday sessions are $10/scout and Saturday sessions are $12/scout, with badges included in every booking.

Yesterday our curator and registrar, Carrie Blough, gave a short presentation on the DAR Museum and our collections at the International Nineteenth Century Studies Association Conference, “Revolution, Revelation, Reconciliation,” in DC. It was great to introduce our organization to so many new faces!
 
We also enjoyed hearing from fellow presenters including the Fairfax Circuit Court Historic Records Center, George Mason University Special Collections Research Center, George Washington University Special Collections Research Center, the Textile Museum, the National Gallery of Art Library, Virginia Museum of History and Culture, Maryland State Archives, the Peoples Archive at the MLK Jr. Memorial Library, and the Clara Barton Missing Soldiers Office Museum.

Hidden inside this hand-embroidered wallet: an oath that could have cost a man his life.

Revolutionary supporters who pledged their loyalty took an enormous risk. If the war hadn’t ended in independence, their signed oaths would have become evidence of treason. These oaths required renouncing the British monarchy, swearing allegiance to the state, and promising to report any treasonous activity. Signing wasn’t symbolic, it was a binding, dangerous commitment.

Christopher Ketley of Lancaster, PA signed his own oath of allegiance and enlisted in the Continental Army in 1776. He kept that oath safe inside this Irish stitch-embroidered wallet.
