stitching words, uniting purpose

MOVIS is a group of artists from New Jersey that have been collaborating on artistic projects since 2006, creating more than 18 exhibitions. The current core members Rita Z. Asch, Berendina Buist, Susan Hockaday, Marsha Levin-Rojer, Liz Mitchell, Frank Magalhaes, and Frank May are now welcoming guest artists to join their newest project "IN A WORD." The exhibition focuses on the impact of words and individual voices. Each artist received a 14"x14" square of muslin to convey a word that holds personal meaning and reflects their purpose. Through embroidered or embellished words, participants will contribute to a collective tapestry that promotes unity and the power of intentional language. Each piece is both a standalone statement and part of a larger, unified expression of purpose. http://movismovis.com

In this event, there will be a constant shift of categorical prompting, which intends to focus the group on a single creative contemplative space at a time. Spencer Soletto (facilitator) will embody the world of these prompts with butoh dance as participants can join via their own movement, conversations around the category, poetic writings, image finding and creating, or simply observing the happenings in the gallery.

This event structure is inspired by the Japanese poetic tradition of Renku poetry. Renku is a collaborative poetry form where poets work in a call-and-response method, creating a growing chain of poems that continuously reference past poems and create new relations via internal structure and shifting categories. (relatable to the surrealist exquisite co**se technique)

This event opens up potentials by allowing this technique of changing categories to prompt open-ended creative processes (not only haikai poetics) while maintaining its centering, shifting, collaborative, collage-like, and generative functions. http://unfoldingmind.org
