Memorial Day and the Red Poppy
The red poppy is a powerful symbol of remembrance for those who gave their lives in military service. Its legacy began in the WWI battlefields of Flanders, where bright red poppies grew among the fallen, inspiring the poem “In Flanders Fields.” Adopted as a symbol of remembrance and sacrifice, the poppy asks us to never forget the cost of conflict. Today, wearing a poppy on Memorial Day honors those who died in service and supports veterans through programs like the VFW and American Legion.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our delegate election at Presidio La Bahía State Historic Site on Sat. (3/28/26). We talked to about 220 people in between battle reenactments, and had 65 ballots cast. Out of 5 candidates Vasquez was the favorite, Mottley and Chenoweth tie for 2nd place. In 1836, Mottley received the most votes, Vasquez came in 2nd, and Chenoweth only got 1 vote.

Some of you may remember that about a year ago our interpretive staff recreated the Ark of the Covenant of the Texas Declaration of Independence. This box was said to have been made from pieces of the original Independence Hall. We are happy to announce that the original Ark will be displayed at the Star of the Republic Museum during our Texas Independence Day Celebration THIS Friday and Saturday! A Huge thank you to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission for loaning this amazing artifact to the museum and to our museum staff for organizing the loan and building the exhibit case. Make sure to stop by the museum to see this piece of Washington-on-the-Brazos' history!
