Clipping from an old "Blue Ridge Guide" issue from the 1890s. It took a little digging but I was able to discover who Mrs. Thomas Corbin was. Her name was Martha Louise Latham and she was born in Fauquier County in 1831 to Robert and Catherine Nelson Latham. She married Thomas Jameson Corbin in 1853. Her minister, who wrote the memorial, speaks of her five sons and three daughters, but she also had two other daughters who died when only small children. There was no date on the clipping, but research shows she died in March of 1896. Both she and her husband are buried at the Amissville Baptist Church Cemetery.

A little information about John Jett Reid who was one of the VMI cadets who fought during the Civil War. Mr. Reid was born in 1846 to Joseph and Cora Virginia Walden Reid. He entered VMI on March 17, 1864. In May of that year, he and 246 other VMI cadets fought in the Battle of New Market. Ten were killed and 47 were wounded. Mr. Reid was one of them. His gun is in the Hall of Valor in New Market. Mr. Reid married Lucy Penn Rodes in 1867. They had three children He died in 1907, Lucy in 1894. I thought our visitors might be interested in a new book written by Mr. John Wrory Ficklin whose roots are in Rappahannock County. His grandfather was born a slave here, and later purchased a small farm in Amissville. There, Mr. Ficklin's father, Woodson Ficklin, grew up. He moved to DC in his teens, where he started his employment at the White House during FDR's administration. He returned to the White House after his service during WWII, becoming a most distinguished member of the White House team, staying there until his retirement in 1983.
I started reading this family memoir last night and I think you will find the writing most engaging. The book is available for sale at Shop. WhiteHouseHistory.org for $39.95.

Photo of some of the children of John Franklin (1900-1953) and Addie Virginia Williams Wines (1903-1988.) They had 14 children. These are the middle ones. This picture was probably given to the Society when we had a program in Chester Gap. No name is written on the photo showing the donor.
Looking up censuses and other records, here is the information I have for each one of the children.
Right to left:
Evelyn Wines 1930-1932. She was married twice, first to Elmer Daniel Hickerson, and then to Rayburn Hickerson.
Samuel "Bud" Wines 1930-1992. He was married to Virginia Willingham.
Robert Arthur Wines 1934-1990. He was married to Merly Mae Scott.
Willliam Gardner Wines 1936-2016.
The name we put on the next person is Emline, but I believe this is Eulice Daisy Wines 1938-2014. She married Lynwood Herman Frazier.
Gene Autry Wines 1939-2008. He married Barbara Leona Wines.
