Our 2027 Summer Exhibition Open Call is live! The deadline is August 10 at midnight ET. Don’t overthink this application. There’s no one thing we’re looking for, and we’re always open to creative new uses of Maxon Mills as an exhibition space.

Artists are selected based on the quality of the work and how well a given piece fits alongside other pieces selected for the show. We accept four types of proposals for our summer programming: ready-to-hang work, site-specific installations, temporary installations/performances, and printed works. Your application can include multiple proposals. Check out https://wassaicproject.slideroom.com/ #/Login for more info.

To everyone who’s new here, and everyone who’s been away for a while — hi again! With our Summer Exhibition now on view and extended open gallery hours (Thursday-Sunday, 12-5 PM), we’d like to take the time to re-introduce ourselves. There’s a lot going on here!

Wassaic Project is a contemporary arts institution that has been a cornerstone of upstate New York’s cultural landscape since 2008, fostering positive social change through art and education. We bring together emerging artists and local communities through world-class contemporary art exhibitions, vital education and public programs, and a highly regarded year-round artist residency program.

Based in the historic Maxon Mills—an 8,000-square-foot, seven-story former grain elevator transformed into a vibrant arts space—Wassaic Project serves as a dynamic incubator for new voices in contemporary art. Annual programming includes the artist residency program, monthly open studios, community events, and three exhibitions. Our arts education programs reach more than 1,000 students each year through after-school art clubs, summer camps, and the free, ADA-accessible family drop-in artmaking space, the Art Nest, open every Saturday from 12–5 PM.

Our current exhibition, “Because, now is the time of monsters” (pictured above) is open from Thursday-Sunday 12-5PM through September 12. Stop by, we’ll be so happy to see you.

Check out the install of Magicfeifei’s () “Tooth Gate” 2025 in front of Wassaic Project! And come see “Tooth Gate” in person at the Opening Reception of our 2026 Summer Exhibition, “Because now is the time of monsters” from 3-6 PM.

Learn more about “Tooth Gate” below!

“Tooth Gate” takes the form of the artist’s two front teeth—with a gap in between—allowing viewers to walk through the structure. The height of the gap is slightly taller than the artist. The piece transforms a distinct physical trait into something monumental and surreal, turning this characteristic into a symbol of power and transformation. The phrase “tooth gate” (牙门, yá mén) is also a pun on 衙门 (yá mén), meaning a government office or gate of authority, suggesting that the artist’s mouth is a place of importance. This idea was also inspired by an ancient anecdote about Song dynasty scholar Song Qi, who had a noticeable gap between his front teeth. When someone mockingly asked what the gap was for, he replied, “My teeth are arranged so that people may come in and out of my mouth”.

Magicfeifei is a multidisciplinary artist based in Chicago. Her practice spans between photography, sculpture and performance. Her practice weaponizes cuteness through magic to challenge and subvert conventional social norms. Employing humor, irony, and deliberate embarrassment, she creates seductive yet discomforting narratives that twist the ordinary into the uncanny, confronting indifference and revealing uncomfortable truths. Feifei received her BFA from School of The Art Institute of Chicago in 2021, and her MFA from the University of Chicago in 2025. Her work has been shown at SkyART, Smart Museum of Art, Sawhorse, Shanghai Seminary, Cochrane-Woods Art Center, Logan Center Gallery, Lightwork, and CICA Museum.

The deadline for Haunted Barn application has been EXTENDED to May 28, midnight EDT. As a reminder, our annual spooky site specific exhibition, Haunted Mill, will be...for the first time...in the Luther Barn!

We are accepting a few types of proposals: site-specific and/or outdoor installations in the Luther Barn and performances. We will prioritize interactive and immersive proposals.

Artists will have complete creative control over their installation, as long as they keep their work PG-13. We’re looking for artists who are excited to participate and get weird, and who are self-directed and independent with their projects. For installation artists, we offer housing in one of our residency houses (for 1–4 weeks between October 2 and November 3) alongside private studio space in Maxon Mills, and additional studio space in Luther Barn. We offer all participating artists and artistic teams a modest honorarium.

If the cost of the application fee presents a financial hardship, please email our Assistant Director of Residency and Exhibitions, Danielle Klebes, at [email protected].
