🎨 What world will you paint?

Join us at The MATT on November 7 for Kids’ Art Workshop: The World I Painted, inspired by Waterbury-born artist Franne Davids and our exhibition, "Franne Davids and the World She Painted."

Young artists will explore folklore-inspired art, experiment with paint on canvas, and use their imaginations to create a world all their own!

How can art express what words sometimes cannot? 🎨
Join us and the wonderful folks over at Distillery at The MATT on November 5 for Cocktails & Conversations: The Language of Art: Expression, Healing & Connection, inspired by our current exhibition, "Franne Davids and the World She Painted."
Join Lyle Cairdeas, the MATT’s Exhibitions and Collections Manager, and Briana Benn-Mirandi, an art therapist from Art and Soul Art Therapy in Madison, for a conversation exploring the connections between art, mental health, and healing. Inspired by local Waterbury artist, Franne Davids’ deeply personal paintings, we’ll explore how art can help us express emotions and experiences, connect with others, and better understand ourselves.
We’re also pleased to welcome the NAMI Waterbury chapter, which will be on hand with a resource table to share information and support for our community. NAMI Waterbury joined us for the exhibition’s opening celebration, and we’re glad to continue building connections with their organization!

Our Education team members clean up nice! ✨

Jason Foberg, Senior Director of Education and Community Impact, and Lillian Hayward, Education Coordinator, attended The Social Chase’s fundraising gala in support of its mission to create inclusive social opportunities for teens and adults in the autism, neurodivergent, and broader disability community.

We’re proud to support The Social Chase and its work to build connections, encourage self-advocacy, and create opportunities for everyone to participate and thrive.

Our commitment to inclusion is reflected in our annual Free to Be exhibition, created in collaboration with The Social Chase, which recently received an Award of Merit from the Connecticut League of Museums! We’re proud to celebrate this recognition and continue creating opportunities for artists to share their perspectives and creativity.

We’re also looking forward to our upcoming Free to Be exhibition featuring artists ages 8 and up on the autism spectrum in our Monteiro Family Community Gallery. Submissions are being accepted through November 11, and the exhibition will be on view December 6 through January 31.

We’re proud to share some exciting news! Our friends at the United Way of Greater Waterbury are serving as Grant Manager for the State of Connecticut Social Equity Council’s R2 Program in the Waterbury Region, a competitive, three-year grant initiative supporting community-based projects through Connecticut cannabis tax revenue. The program provides funding to eligible organizations to implement projects focused on Economic Development, Reentry Initiatives (for justice-impacted youth and adults), and Youth Initiatives.

The MATT has been selected to receive $25,000 annually for the next three years to expand our youth referral and mentoring program! This support will help us continue connecting young people with opportunities, guidance, and meaningful relationships through art, history, and community.

We’re grateful to the United Way of Greater Waterbury and the Social Equity Council for investing in our community and helping us create more opportunities for local youth.

American artist Ming Smith spent her early and formative years traveling throughout Europe, experiences that continue to shape her photography today.
Ming Smith: Jazz Requiem – Notations in Blue explores Smith’s relationship to place and identity and the ways her experiences abroad shaped her artistic practice.
Coming of age during a time when many Black visual artists, dancers, writers, musicians, and poets found Europe more receptive to their work, Smith developed a visual language shaped by creative freedom and exchange. Dance and music, especially jazz, became important throughlines in her work, influencing the rhythm, movement, and intuition found within her photographs.
The exhibition also traces Smith’s encounters with photographers including Brassaï and Henri Cartier-Bresson during her time in Paris, while revealing how she developed a photographic practice distinctly her own.
Through experimentation, movement, and visual meditation, Smith creates images that capture the fleeting qualities of a moment while exploring what it means to see, remember, and represent Black life on her own terms.

Our Free to Be exhibition, presented in partnership with The Social Chase, Inc., celebrates the unique perspectives, ideas, and artistic voices of artists on the autism spectrum. And now, we’re honored to share that Free to Be has received a 2026 Award of Merit from the Connecticut League of Museums!

Start your Monday with fresh air, beautiful fall foliage, and a little local history! Join us for our FINAL History Hike of the year at Indian Well State Park on October 19 from 10 AM to 12 PM.

We'll explore the 2-mile Woodsend and Paugussett Trail Loop, with scenic views of the Housatonic River and surrounding cliffs. It's a great way to get outside, enjoy good company, and connect with nature.
