Basement Find of the Week: Ed Banach's 1984 U.S. Olympic Team Jacket 🇺🇸🤼

This warm up jacket belonged to Ed Banach, who won a gold medal in freestyle wrestling at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Wrestling at 198 pounds, Banach captured Olympic gold with a dominant 15–3 victory over Akira Ota of Japan in the championship match.

A standout at the University of Iowa under legendary coach Dan Gable, Banach was a three-time NCAA champion and four-time All-American. At the 1984 Olympics, he and his twin brother, Lou Banach, made history as the first American twin brothers to win wrestling gold medals at the same Olympic Games.

Despite competing with the effects of multiple concussions, Banach achieved one of the greatest accomplishments in American wrestling history. This jacket represents not only his Olympic triumph, but also the determination, resilience, and excellence that defined his career. In 2002, he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
