📚 On This Day in Black History – May 31, 1921 📚

Today we remember the beginning of the Tulsa Race Massacre, one of the deadliest acts of racial violence in United States history.

Located in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the Greenwood District was known across the nation as "Black Wall Street." Built by African American entrepreneurs, professionals, educators, and families, Greenwood was a thriving center of Black wealth, business ownership, and community success.

The violence began after a young Black man named Dick Rowland was falsely accused of assaulting a white elevator operator. As tensions escalated, armed white mobs, many deputized by local authorities, attacked Greenwood over the course of May 31 and June 1, 1921.

🏘️ More than 35 square blocks were destroyed.

🏠 Over 1,200 homes were burned to the ground.

⛪ Businesses, churches, schools, and a hospital were looted and destroyed.

🕊️ Up to 300 Black residents were killed, while thousands were left homeless and forced into internment camps.

The destruction of Greenwood erased generations of wealth and opportunity and altered the future of one of America's most successful Black communities.

For decades, the massacre was excluded from textbooks and public discussion. Today, descendants, historians, and community advocates continue the work of preserving the truth, honoring the victims, and seeking justice.

The story of Greenwood reminds us why preserving history matters. When we know the truth about the past, we are better equipped to build a more just future.
