Margaret Ashmun, born in Rural in 1875 and graduated from Waupaca High School in 1892, was an author and poet. This overcast and rainy day in Waupaca reminded us of this poem by Ashmun:

Rain Again
Once more the down-pour comes,
Well, let it rain.
We can be placid here behind the pane,
Watching a fluid world through streaming glass.
What though we meant to sport upon the grass,
Eating our meal in gypsy ecstasy,
Plucking the wild fruit from the cherry tree,
We have our books to read while hailstones clink,
And better yet we have our thoughts to think -
Castles to build and raze and rear again;
And good, much good, to ponder;
Let it rain

🍂 Join us for the first in our Fall Program Series! 🍂

Join the Waupaca Historical Society on Thurs., September 17 at 6 p.m. at the Holly History & Genealogy Center for “A Visit with Margaret Ashmun” with Dr. Connie Haack-Hurlbut.

Born in Rural in 1875, Margaret Ashmun was an educator, author, editor, artist, traveler, and biographer whose writings explored topics that still resonate today—including women’s education and independence, adoption, domestic violence, the effects of war, and finding joy in everyday life.

Dr. Haack-Hurlbut’s decades-long journey researching Ashmun’s life began with a simple question and became a fascinating historical “detective” story that took her from Waupaca to archives across the country. The evening will also feature live period music performed by Harold “Lefty” Clumpner, Dawn Nelson, Kari Esbensen, and Amy Ording.

📍 Holly History & Genealogy Center, 321 S. Main Street
🕕 Program begins at 6 p.m. | Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
🎟️ Free and open to the public! Seating is limited.

Come learn about a remarkable Waupaca woman and help us kick off our fall series of programs! We hope to see you there!
