On this Day In History, 1937, Tom McLean Kept Busy, Fish Story With Friends and Later Life Saving.

Dr Howard Stitt, of Cincinnati, OH and his wife, Margaret Lorena, were the guests of Thomas McLean and his wife, Pauline, at their Lake White summer home. Dr Stitt managed to reel in an exceptionally large "Crappie", measuring fourteen inches in length.

Previous to this catch, the largest one reported here, was brought by Frank Elliot, a retired Pike County mail carrier, whose catch measured thirteen inches.

But that wasn't their only excitement, as later Tom heard a person in Lake White, screaming for help.

McLean horridly ran from the porch of their summer cottage, and jumped into his boat, and rushed to the aid of a drowning man.

The man who was not identified by McLean, gasped for breath as he grabbed hold of the boat, and was towed safely to the shore.

McLean and his wife's cottage was one of the first new ones built there along the lake.

On this Day In History, 1926, Lucretius Allen, is struck and killed by a bolt of lightning, while attending church in Allen Chapel, in Jackson Township.

Lightning Bolt Cause Of Death During Services At The Jerusalem Church. Flash Through Window. Service was continued after the excitement.

Death in the form of a bolt of lightning, Sunday afternoon at 2pm, invaded the Memorial services in progress at Allen Chapel in Jackson Township, five miles northeast of Beaver, and snapped out the life of Lucretius 'Kirk' L Allen, a young farmer from near Linn.

He and his cousin, George Clifford Parmer, a young man of about the same age, were sitting side by side in the church, when the bolt of lightning struck a tree at the corner of the church, ran down the side of the building and flashed through an open window, striking Allen, and killing him instantly, while his companion, Palmer and two other young men, John Kite and Nelson Overly, who occupied the nest seat, were attended to by Dr Wayne Bronough, of Stockdale.

The victim, days short of his twenty third birthday, was the son of James Carl & Nora Jane (McLaughlin) Allen, well known residents of this area. Kirk is survived by his parents, and his younger brother, Clarence Oliver.

Everyone sitting nearby the bolt's path were shocked severely. Even those standing in the rear of the chapel felt the force of the shock. The bolt was followed by a deafening crash of thunder. It was several minutes after the lightning struck that it was discovered that Allen had been killed.

Palmer was taken to the home of his parents, Phillip Sheridan & Amanda E (Allen) Palmer Sr. Amanda Palmer was young Kirk's Aunt, his father's older sister. Services were continued briefly and then dismissed, with a short prayer by the pastor.

Two windows and the casements were shattered.

Funeral services were held at the same church, where Allen met his fate, Tuesday afternoon at 2pm. He was buried there, in the churchyard cemetery.

Omega School & Grange Hall erected late 1800's.

The building, which was erected in the late 1800s, was made from brick that was formed and fired in Waverly. The supplier of the brick was Bauersach's Brick Yard, which was located near the area where the present day "El charro" restaurant stands in Green Acres.

The structure has seen many uses over the years, and was utilized as a school where John R. Teichart, former Waverly City School superintendent, once taught before the students were moved to Waverly in the 1930's. It was used as a community Grange Hall for several years hosting public dinners and social gatherings.

An article from the Waverly News in 1900 mentions the meeting of the Tenth Annual Possum Supper and Campfire of Joseph Crimer Post 602 GAR (Grand Army of the Republic, Civil War veterans of the Union Army) at the hall in Omega.
