Robert Hawkins, an important figure in the history of African-American golf, was once the manager of Wayland's own Sandy Burr Country Club! He went on to build and operate Mapledale Country Club, a Black golf course and country club in Stow, now known as Stow Acres. It was the first course of this kind in Massachusetts, and one of the earliest Black-owned, operated, and designed golf courses in the country. A pop-up exhibit celebrating Hawkins' achievements by Rediscover Mapledale is on display at the Wayland Museum for the month of October and you still have a chance to see it! Come by and learn more about this wonderful history with ties to Wayland. While there, you can check out our sports exhibit, The Home Team, which celebrates all types of sport and play in Wayland. As many know, Head Of The Charles Regatta starts today, and our neighbors and community members have Wayland on the water!

Did you know Wayland-Weston Crew first raced the Head of the Charles in 2003 with Men’s and Women’s Youth Eights, check out their page for a great tbt pic!

Another Waylander to cheer for is Susie Klein. She’s a longtime rower and coxswain with Cambridge Boat Club and serves on the board of the Charles River Watershed Association. In today’s Boston Globe, she talks about racing just a few inches above the river. The article is a great reminder of how much the river has changed and benefitted from community groups. For the first time ever, we’re opening the doors to five of Wayland’s mid-century modern homes.

Join us Sunday, October 25, 12–4 PM, for the Wayland Mid-Century Modern House Tour. These homes run from Deck Houses to Core Contemporaries. Together they tell the story of how Wayland grew after WWII, and how today’s owners have made these houses their own.

Step inside Wayland’s mid-century modern homes, one day only! On Sunday, October 25, from 12–4 PM, five local homes open their doors for our first-ever Mid-Century Modern House Tour. From Deck Houses to Contemporaries, some lovingly preserved and some reimagined for modern life, these homes tell the story of Wayland’s post-war architectural legacy.
