Fred G. Dale Planetarium at Wayne State College

Fred G. Dale Planetarium at Wayne State College The Fred G. The planetarium has always and continues to support the science curriculum on campus. Mr.

Dale Planetarium at Wayne State College houses the most technologically advanced and educationally versatile planetarium in the state of Nebraska with a Spitz SciDome high-definition projection system (www.spitzinc.com) that puts 3 million pixels on the 30 foot dome, can show 500 million stars, can look at space from any location in the solar system, can move backward and forward through time 100,

000 years, and much more! Also part of the renovation was the installation of a 7.2 surround sound system, brand new carpet and reclining, and dome-experience specific seating for up to 50 viewers. The lobby includes some wonderful astronomical murals by local artist and professional mural painter Rich Bohacek, photos and displays, a kid’s corner, and a scale model of the solar system. In addition to serving Wayne State students on a daily basis, the facility is also made available to area residents through special programs offered to schools and organizations and regularly scheduled shows offered to the general public on Sunday afternoons. Dale has been an especially useful resource in serving both the needs of Wayne State students and the interests of area residents. In the 40 years of its operation, more than 140,000 people have visited the planetarium, gaining new insight into the wonders and workings of the universe. Carl Rump, associate professor of earth science, was the director of the planetarium from 1969 – 2008. Dr. Todd Young, professor of physics and astronomy, is the current director.

On Friday at 7 pm, our fulldome show, narrated by Hayley Atwell, is "Edge of Darkness." This show features amazing scenes of places never before seen gathered by key space missions, including the great cliffs on comet 67P, a close look at the fascinating bright "lights" on Ceres, and the first ever close ups of dwarf binary planet Pluto/Charon and its moons. And this is followed by another rockin' laser show at 8 pm "Laser Fun!"

On Saturday at 1 pm, our fulldome show, narrated by David Tennent, is “Tales of a Time Traveler.” In Tales of a Time Traveler, you will discover that time is not so easily defined. Time is illusive, impossible to hold. It can't be owned. It can't be stopped. Time travel surrounds you – from the biological clock in your brain and the changing shadows on a sundial, to the history of life on Earth. Then the story expands to the lives of stars, the time scale of the Big Bang, and the distortion of time by gravity. And this is followed by the awesome laser show “Women That Rock” at 2 pm.

Prior to both of these fulldome shows is a relaxing tour of a spring night sky. The doors open 20 minutes prior to a planetarium show - come early to claim your seat! Go to www.wsc.edu/planetarium to see the detailed spring schedule.

For this weekend, the Fred G. Dale Planetarium joins in the celebration of Earth Day! This weekend's planetarium shows are all about life and our incredible planet Earth. Friday at 7 pm is our new fulldome show "Dynamic Earth," which explores the inner workings of Earth’s great life support system: the global climate. Narrated by Liam Neeson, you will ride along on swirling ocean and wind currents, dive into the heart of a monster hurricane, come face-to-face with sharks and gigantic whales, and fly into roiling volcanoes! Then, on Friday at 8 pm, we present "Living Worlds." Narrated by Daveed Diggs, you will journey through space and time to discover how life makes Earth livable, where it could be found elsewhere in the cosmos, and what new technologies we might use to find it.

On Saturday, we will present these shows again, with "Living Worlds" at 1 pm and "Dynamic Earth" at 2 pm.

And prior to these fulldome shows, enjoy relaxing tour of a spring night sky. The doors open 20 minutes prior to a planetarium show - come early to claim your seat! Remember that going to any of these shows marks off a square on your Earth Month Bingo Card!

Around 5:45 pm central time, check in with nasa.gov to see Artemis astronauts make their closest approach to the Moon as they swing around the far side!

04/01/2026

Today marks the beginning of an exciting new era in space exploration with the launch of Artemis II! At 5:24 pm central time, four astronauts will launch from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and travel on a 10-day lunar fly-around. This is the first trip to the Moon in over 50 years. The mission's main objectives are to test the life-support and operational systems in the Orion spacecraft, where the crew is located, which sits on top of the largest rocket ever created - the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket.

Assuming this mission is successful, this will open the doors for future moon landings starting in 2027 or 2028 with the goal of building a permanent presence on the Moon with a science station and Moon colony. And after the successful completion of a Moon colony, preparations will begin for the exploration of Mars in the 2040s!

NASA is live-streaming the entire event at nasa.gov.

To learn more about the Artemis II, the Moon, and the many incredible wonders in our Universe, please visit the Fred G. Dale Planetarium (wsc.edu/planetarium)!
