50 years ago, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Section 1681 was enacted. It states "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of s*x, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
These 37 words opened the doors to all kinds of opportunities for women. Women were able to take advantage of traditionally "male" coursework and professions such as plumbing or welding, and men were able to enroll in classes such as nursing and teaching. Women started earning more college degrees, becoming professors, and most of all, participating in sports. Title IX also safeguarded women's positions in the case of pregnancy. The Amendment has improved equality within education, scholarships, school funding, and especially women's representation in sports, but there is still much to be done before complete equality can be reached.
