Congratulations to our Gallery 200 artist Emilia Hajduczenia on last Saturday’s dedication of her new mural at the West Chicago WCTU Fountain on Main Street! 💜

This fountain holds a lot of history in West Chicago and we love to see it now feature this nature based mural inside the basin by Emilia through her amazing artistic talents! To see more of Emilia’s work stop into Gallery 200! 🖼️ This project was funded by the City of West Chicago Government Cultural Arts Commission.

The fountain was dedicated on the corner of Main and Washington Streets on October 14, 1897, before a crowd estimated at 2,000 people. The Woman’s Christian Temperance Union placed it there deliberately: the cast-iron fountain offered free water to railroad workers so they could drink without stepping into a saloon, the main goal of the temperance group. When the interurban tracks arrived in 1909, it was moved. After a few temporary locations, in 1995 it was restored to its original polychrome paint and returned to a permanent home here at 126 Main.
